George Soros bankrolling worldwide “fact-checking” network
By Kevin Hughes // Feb 01, 2023

A vast industry of "fact checkers" and experts on "misinformation" is being funded by a familiar figure – George Soros. This industry is actually promoting suppression of anything against the Left.

According to the New York Post, an investigation of several fact-checking groups revealed that their funding came from the Hungarian-born American billionaire. The said groups were bent on silencing and shaming conservative voices online so that the leftist narrative can remain unchecked.

Back in late 2022, the Soros-funded Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights and 11 other leftist groups urged Big Tech CEOs to take "immediate action" against disinformation to "help prevent the undermining of democracy." Of the 11 other signatories, eight were financed by Soros – having received a combined $30.3 million from the globalist billionaire in just a span of four years. Soros has been successful in employing fact-checkers both in America and in Europe. Just like their American counterparts, European fact-checkers are mostly critical of the political right.

Leading fact-checking organizations such as PolitiFact, Snopes and others have faced accusations of left-wing political bias, accusations several studies over the years have verified. One such paper scrutinizing PolitiFact found that it is six times more likely to defend President Joe Biden in its "fact-checks" than verify his statements.

The Poynter Institute, PolitiFact's parent, receives funding from several entities including the Soros-financed Tides Foundation and Tides Center. It also receives money from John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Ford Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

Another Poynter Institute Project, the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN), had been bankrolled by Soros' Open Society Foundations when it began in 2015. Other backers for the IFCN included the Omidyar Network and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The IFCN was originally funded by the National Endowment for Democracy in its initial days.

The IFCN serves as the "high body" for the large number of fact-checking organizations under its direction, which unite under a shared code of principles, and a mission "to bring together the growing community of fact-checkers around the world and advocates of factual information in the global fight against misinformation."

The Associated Press and the Washington Post are just some of the mainstream media outlets relying on the IFCN for fact-checks.

Big Tech firms are employing fact checkers

The globalist Soros is aware of how the Left has adopted "disinformation" as its newest strategy to address threats to the narrative. Thus, his funding of fact checkers has served to bolster this crucial element of censorship. Even Big Tech firms have followed his footsteps.

California-based Facebook, for example, notoriously employs fact checkers to avoid responsibility for censorship. The social media platform has acknowledged in court that fact checks, despite their pretext of impartiality and objectivity, are just viewpoints.

The problem, however, is that these fact checks are anything but impartial.

Facebook proceeded to censor content about the controversial "laptop from hell" once owned by Hunter Biden, given that intelligence officials stated the possibility of it being "Russian disinformation." Alongside other Big Tech firms, it also censored articles positing the possibility of the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) coming from a laboratory. The platform established by Mark Zuckerberg also put warning labels on content questioning the effects of climate change even though they are supported by data.

Facebook is not the only platform influenced by Soros' efforts to combat so-called disinformation.

Last year, the billionaire partnered with LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, himself a leftist. The two agreed to financially back a project against disinformation called Good Information Inc., a name that may have been taken straight from British author George Orwell.
