Judge orders Steve Bannon to report to prison on July 1 to begin serving sentence for ginned-up “crime” for which no Democrat is ever prosecuted
By Ramon Tomey // Jun 09, 2024

A federal judge has ordered former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon to report to prison on July 1 to begin serving a sentence.

In July 2022, Bannon was found guilty on two counts of contempt of Congress for defying subpoenas sent by the House J6 Select Committee. Because of this, he was sentenced to four months behind bars. Bannon appealed the case, however – prompting his sentence to be put on hold.

But U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols of the District Court for D.C. ruled on June 6 that Bannon should serve his jail sentence at the soonest, ordering the erstwhile advisor to former President Donald Trump to report to prison on July 1. The magistrate argued that he did not believe the "original basis" for his stay of the imposition of Bannon's sentence existed any longer, following an appeals court rejecting Bannon's appeal and upholding his conviction. The host of "Bannon's War Room" was originally sentenced in October 2022, but it was put on hold pending appeal. His lawyers made their case to a three-judge federal appeals court panel in November of the following year. However, the appeals court upheld Bannon's conviction in May.

Federal prosecutors soon filed a motion asking Nichols to order Bannon to report to prison. They argued that there was "no legal basis" for the continued stay of the sentence after his conviction was upheld – which the magistrate's June 6 ruling sided with. Despite this, NBC News said he could still appeal Nichols' ruling ordering him to report to prison.

Bannon wasn't the only one slapped with jail time for defying the J6 Committee's subpoenas. Former White House Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy Director Peter Navarro was also sentenced to four months in jail and fined $9,500. The economist is set to be released on July 17.

Trump blasts Bannon's sentence, calls it a "tragedy"

"Bannon's lawyers argued that the sentence should be stayed until they appeal it to the full appeals court and the Supreme Court. Any delay, of course, would benefit Bannon if Trump is elected president in November and decides – just as he did on the last day of his presidency on Jan. 20, 2021 – to pardon Bannon on federal criminal charges," NBC News wrote.

"The defendant chose allegiance to Trump over compliance with the law,"Assistant U.S. Attorney Molly Gaston told jurors during closing arguments in Bannon's trial in 2022. Gaston now serves on the team of Special Counsel Jack Smith.

Meanwhile, Trump himself condemned the sentence on Bannon in a post on Truth Social, calling it a "total and complete American tragedy." He suggested that instead of his former chief strategist, members of the Jan. 6 Select Committee should be prosecuted instead.

Bannon is set to go on trial on separate state charges in New York later this year. This trial involves allegations that he defrauded donors who gave money to build a wall on the southern U.S. border. While he has entered a not guilty plea to this trial, Bannon had been charged in the same alleged scheme by federal prosecutors before Trump pardoned him.

The former chief strategist was unfazed when he entered the courthouse in Washington, D.C. on June 6. Bannon looked calm and stayed smiling as Nichols announced his decision. In contrast, Bannon's lawyer David Schoen started to raise his voice.

The lawyer denounced the decision and called it "contrary to our system of justice." He continued: "You're sending a man to prison who thought he was complying with the law. We don't do that in my system."
