Border Czar Kamala Harris somehow blames Trump for surge in illegal immigration
By Laura Harris // Oct 22, 2024

Vice President Kamala Harris has blamed former President Donald Trump for the ongoing and escalating illegal immigration.

In a 30-minute interview with Fox News anchor Bret Baier on Oct. 16, Harris, who was appointed as the "Border Czar" by President Joe Biden in 2021, faced tough questions on immigration. Baier pushed Harris on immigration policy, particularly on the issue of undocumented immigrants linked to crimes in the United States. "Well, I'm glad you raised the issue of immigration because I agree with you," Harris stated. "It is a topic of discussion that people want to rightly have. You know what I'm going to talk about... we have a broken immigration system that needs to be repaired."

Harris insisted that the Biden-Harris administration recognized the immigration crisis from the beginning.

"We have done a number of things, including addressing our asylum system and putting more resources, getting more judges, what we needed to do to tighten up penalties and increase penalties for illegal crossings. What we needed to deal with points of entry between border, entry points. That's the work we did, and we worked on supporting what was a bipartisan effort, including some of the most conservative members of the United States Congress, to actually strengthen the border," Harris claimed.

In other words, she refused to take the blame for her failures as border czar. Instead, she claimed that Trump used his influence to urge Republicans to block the bipartisan border security deal, which, in turn, obstructed her efforts to address the surge in illegal immigration.

"That border bill would have put 1,500 more border agents at the border, which is why I believe the Border Patrol agents supported the bill. It would have allowed us to stem the flow of fentanyl coming into the United States, which is a scourge affecting people of every background and every geographic location in our country, killing people," the Democratic presidential candidate said.

"It would have allowed us to put more resources into prosecuting transnational criminal organizations, which I have done as the former attorney general of a border state." she said, alleging that "Donald Trump learned about that bill and told them to kill it because he preferred to run on a problem instead of fixing a problem."

Baier refuted this by stating that six Democrats also voted against the bill.

Baier grills Harris on her 2019 policy stances, differences from Biden

Aside from immigration issues, Baier also grilled Harris on her 2019 policy stances and her potential differences from Biden.

During the interview, Baier also asked Harris the same question she struggled to answer in recent interviews: "What sets her apart from President Joe Biden?" But this time, she was more prepared.

"My presidency will not be a continuation of Joe Biden's presidency and like every new president that comes into office, I will bring my life experiences, my professional experiences and fresh and new ideas," Harris said. "I represent a new generation of leadership."

Harris also addressed the controversy surrounding federal funding for gender transition surgeries for transgender prisoners or detained migrants.

"He spent $20 million on those ads trying to create a sense of fear in the voters because he actually has no plan in this election that is about focusing on the needs of the American people," Harris said regarding the ads that Trump released against her. She then shrugged it off and called the issue "quite remote" compared to the larger concerns of American voters.
