According to the 28-page complaint filed in Nebraska, Hein accused the UNMC doctors of medical malpractice while seeking financial compensation and accountability after the doctors brushed her off and simply advised her to seek mental health counseling for having regrets after the surgery. The doctors even told her it was "just part of your gender journey." (Related: Detransitioner Chloe Cole to sue doctors who forced her to undergo “gender-affirming” procedures.)
The lawsuit named the defendants as Dr. Ahia Amoura, an OB-GYN physician and Megan Smith-Sallans, a gender therapist who quickly diagnosed her with gender dysphoria after just 55 minutes of her initial consultation in July 2017; Dr. Perry Johnson, who performed the surgery, and Dr. Stephan Barrientos, who assisted with the procedure just after two consultations.
Moreover, Smith-Sallanas referred Hein for a double mastectomy in that same year and had the irreversible procedure done in 2018. Back then, she told Johnson and Barrientos that she was having rib pain and stopped wearing a chest binder for a few months due to severe pain but they still proceeded anyway. Hein recounted it as "one of the worst times in my life."
Harmeet Dhillon, the lawyer representing Hein, claims that the doctors used coercive methods like "your daughter will commit suicide if you don't agree to this" to convince Hein and her parents to do the surgery.

"Doctors should not behave this way toward vulnerable children or families. Doctors should not be mutilating and permanently disfiguring children without clear medical necessity, which did not present itself in this case," Dhillon added.
Harmeet Dhillon, Hein's lawyer from the Center for American Liberty, characterized the case as "shocking malpractice," asserting that coercive methods were used to convince the family to agree to the surgery. She claims that doctors told Hein's parents, "Your daughter will commit suicide if you don't agree to this," which she believes is an unacceptable way to handle vulnerable children and families.
In 2015, Hein began her traumatic journey when her parents got divorced. She struggled in school and experienced anxiety and panic attacks, and was then diagnosed with depression and generalized anxiety disorder and prescribed antipsychotic medication.
Due to that tragic incident, Hein spent more time online and fell into the trap of a groomer who manipulated her into sending explicit pictures. The man got violent when Hein refused to send more pictures, which escalated the situation to the police.
She was then so traumatized that when she entered puberty, Hein began to hate her period and feel uncomfortable with her developing breasts. This experience ultimately led her to explore the idea of transitioning. She followed trans influencers and was then convinced that she was born in the wrong gender.
To start her trans journey, she purchased a chest binder, transferred from an all-girls school, and adopted a new name. Hein embraced her male identity and openly discussed being transgender with her parents and mental health professionals. She was even brainwashed by the information she found online that undergoing breast surgery could improve her mental well-being.
But little did she know, these treatments had left her with irreversible permanent scars, a deeper voice, and hormonal imbalances. She even started to experience pain in her joints, lumbar spine, hands, wrists, elbows and pelvic area due to hormone therapy. And now the greatest consequence is she would not have the chance to be a mother.
As she recounts the process, she can't help but express her dissatisfaction: "I was going through the darkest and most chaotic time in my life, and instead of being given the help I needed, these doctors affirmed that chaos into reality."
"I don't think kids can ever consent to having essentially full bodily functions taken away at a young age before they even know what that means. I was talked into medical intervention that I could not fully understand the long-term impacts and consequences of."
