Pro-abortion Trump says Florida’s new heartbeat law to protect unborn children from murder is a “terrible mistake”
By Ethan Huff // Sep 21, 2023

Former President Donald Trump is really upset about the recent passage of a new heartbeat law in Florida.

In speaking with NBC's "Meet the Press" this week, Trump blasted the pro-life legislation, which protects unborn children from being murdered in the womb through abortion after six weeks when their heartbeat can be detected, as a "terrible mistake" and "a terrible thing."

When asked by host Kristen Welker if he would sign a federal ban on abortion at 15 weeks if reelected as president in 2024, Trump danced around the issue and refused to commit to it.

"Are you talking about a complete ban?" Trump asked Welker in response to her question.

"A ban at 15 weeks," she responded.

"Well, people are starting to think of 15 weeks, it seems to be a number that people are talking about right now," Trump said back.

"Would you sign that?" Welker asked a second time.

"I would sit down with both sides and I'd negotiate something, and we'll end up with peace on that issue for the first time in 52 years. I'm not going to say if I would or I wouldn't."

Trump confirms DeSantis "would sign a five-week and six-week ban," but not Trump

One of Trump's Republican opponents for president in 2024, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, is in full support of these kinds of heartbeat bills. Trump confirmed this during the interview, stating that DeSantis "would sign a five-week and six-week ban," but not Trump.

"I think what he did is a terrible thing and a terrible mistake," Trump stated when questioned by Welker about DeSantis' support for heartbeat bills.

In Trump's view, the best approach is to go after Democrats on late-term abortion rather than trying to save babies the moment they develop beating hearts.

"But we'll come up with a number, but at the same time, Democrats won't be able to go out at six months, seven months, eight months and allow an abortion," Trump said.

In other words, it is all about strategy in Trump's mind rather than about doing what is right for unborn human life.

"It could be state or it could be federal, I don't frankly care," Trump stated bluntly. "No, no. Let me just tell you what I'd do. I'm going to come together with all groups, and we're going to have something that's acceptable."

For all the flack he is taking by Trump supporters right now for supposedly supporting abortion, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has yet to say anything this blatantly cold and uncaring about unborn human life like Trump has.

"Laws protecting the unborn are not a 'terrible mistake,'" commented Alliance Defending Freedom President Kristen Waggoner about Trump's distasteful remarks.

"They are the hallmark of a just and moral society. Governors who protect life should be applauded, not attacked."

In the comments on a Fox News story about Trump's interview, someone wrote that it is laughable for Trump to be saying these types of things after having already served a full presidential term and done nothing to negotiate with the other side of the aisle.

"Trump didn't negotiate a single thing with both sides in four years, but if you give him a second chance, it will be better this time," this person wrote mockingly.

"Who says Trump isn't a real politician?" asked another. "His position on abortion and other issues depends on who he's talking to. If that's not being a real politician, I don't know what is."
