Texas Gov. Greg Abbott deploys special border force in preparation for influx of illegal aliens as Title 42 expires
By Belle Carter // May 10, 2023

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has deployed a special border force in preparation for the influx of illegal aliens at the southern border as the pandemic-era public health order Title 42 expires on Thursday, May 11. Title 42 allows federal border agents to rapidly expel illegal immigrants to Mexico and was first implemented in March 2020 at the start of the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) to mitigate the spread of the virus in crowded detention settings.

"With the ending of Title 42 on Thursday, President [Joe] Biden is laying down the welcome mat to people across the entire world," said Abbott. "The Texas National Guard is loading Blackhawk helicopters and C-130s and deploying specially trained soldiers for the Texas Tactical Border Force, who will be deployed to hotspots all along the border to help intercept and repel large groups of migrants trying to enter Texas illegally."

He added that the tactical border force is set to boost "Operation Lone Star" efforts in securing the Texas border in the anticipated spike in illegal immigration. Border towns along the 3,100-kilometer (1,900-mile) frontier are readying for what could be several thousand people trying to cross into the U.S. every day.

The expiring public health order is to be replaced by what the Biden administration said to be legal pathways to an asylum for those qualified and who do it properly, and "strict punishments for those trying to cross the border illegally."

As per Abbott, the National Guard team will focus on identifying crossing points and shutting them down. They will also have access to aircraft, boats, night vision equipment and riot gear as they are expecting an increase in the border arrivals as a result of pent-up demand and the perception among illegal crossers that they would be allowed to enter America. Many of them are from Mexico, Venezuela and Central America.

At a news conference, the governor said he would continue to bus illegal immigrants from the border to "sanctuary cities" such as Chicago and New York. However, Big Apple officials announced last week they would send the illegal immigrants to a small city in suburban Rockland County, drawing pushback from local officials, who declared a state of emergency.

Moreover, Abbott is working with state lawmakers to make it a felony to illegally enter Texas from Mexico or to be involved in so-called stash houses for migrants who have crossed the border illegally. Another measure would impose a 10-year minimum jail sentence for anyone convicted of smuggling people into Texas.

Thousands of migrants already at the border

According to recent reports, thousands of migrants are already at the southern border even before Title 42 ends. El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser estimated that roughly 10,000 to 12,000 illegal immigrants are waiting to cross the border. The mayor said migrants are flocking to the border under what he said is the false assumption that it will be easier to gain entry to the U.S. as soon as the public health order expires. The El Paso Police Department has warned drivers to "use extra caution" due to groups of migrants running into traffic on highways and streets along the border and downtown. Electronic signs posted along the six-lane Cesar Chavez Border Highway remind drivers to watch out for "unexpected pedestrians" near the Rio Grande.

City officials said parts of Father Rahm Avenue will be shut down as some 1,800 migrants are taking refuge and sleeping on sidewalks of the historic Sacred Heart Catholic Church over the weekend. The streetcar service has been suspended until further notice.

The Department of Homeland Security also received approval from the Department of Defense to deploy 1,500 active duty military members to the border to assist with data entry, warehousing and monitoring efforts. However, those service members will not be permitted to assist in migrant processing.
