Democratic Sen. Bob Casey claims to oppose the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports, but his record says otherwise
By Laura Harris // Nov 11, 2024

Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) claims to oppose the participation of transgender athletes in women's sports, but his statements and voting record show otherwise.

According to the Daily Wire, Casey, who recently lost his bid to be reelected to a fourth term as Pennsylvania's senator, has been a hard-line advocate of transgender participation in women's sports since 2016. That year, Casey encouraged the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) to relocate events from North Carolina to Pennsylvania after the state passed laws restricting transgenders access to bathrooms and locker rooms. "Pennsylvania is proud of its diversity across the Commonwealth," Casey wrote in a September 2016 letter to the president of the NCAA. "We strive to achieve equality for the people who both reside and visit the Commonwealth regardless of race, gender, religion, sexual orientation or sexual identification."

Years later, Casey criticized Republicans on X for focusing on the issue of transgender athletes in women's sports.

"No one should fear for their safety because of the gender with which they identify," he posted on X in August 2020, referring to an article regarding an assault against a transgender individual in a bathroom. "Yet some extreme Republican politicians care more about what bathrooms transgender people use or what sports team they play on, than they do about violence against transgender women of color."

The following year, Casey co-sponsored the Equality Act of 2021, which advocates for broader anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQ+ community by amending the 1964 Civil Rights Act. This bill has sought to prevent "discrimination on the basis of sex, gender identity and sexual orientation."

"I believe LGBTQ+ individuals, like all individuals, should be able to live and flourish in a safe and welcoming environment without fear of harassment or discrimination," Casey said at the time.

The 2021 version of the act passed in the House of Representatives and died in committee in the Senate. He co-sponsored the 2023 version of the bill when it was reintroduced in Congress, but it also did not pass.

Nolte: Democrats always pretend to be conservatives to get elected

A June 2023 letter from Casey, which expressed his support for the transitioning attempts of young adults, was also exposed by the Daily Caller News Foundation in May. In the letter, he said that the participation of transgender athletes in women's sports was only based on "overgeneralized" and "unfounded assumptions."

"The decision to transition is a profoundly significant and challenging one that young adults make after careful consideration," Casey wrote at that time. "This is a conclusion that young adults reach after extensive consultation with their medical providers and loved ones and with the knowledge of the tremendous social obstacles that unfortunately lie ahead."

However, Casey has flipped all of these stances in a campaign ad he released a few days before Election Day on Nov. 5. In the ad, Casey claimed that he is "not for men in girls' sports," despite the contradiction that his statements and voting record show.

"This is what Democrats always have to do to get elected: Pretend to be conservatives," John Nolte wrote for Breitbart.
