Trump says he’ll VOTE NO on Florida’s pro-abortion amendment
By Ava Grace // Sep 04, 2024

Former President Donald Trump has stressed that he would vote against an amendment to the Florida Constitution enshrining legal abortion before fetal viability.

He expressed his support for the heartbeat abortion ban on Aug. 30, providing some hope to pro-lifers. Trump told Fox News that day: "The Democrats are radical, because the nine months is just a ridiculous situation. All of that stuff is unacceptable, so I'll be voting no for that reason."

The former president initially incurred the wrath of pro-lifers already dismayed with his refusal to share his opinion on the amendment and his prediction that it would succeed. "I think the six-week [window] is too short, there has to be more time. [I'm] going to be voting that we need more than six weeks," he told NBC News on Aug. 29.

Trump's Aug. 30 remarks effectively supported Florida's heartbeat-based ban on infanticide, which prohibits abortions after six weeks. It also appeared to suggest he was open to voting in favor of the ballot measure aimed at overturning the law. According to LifeSiteNews, Trump's answer during his Aug. 29 interview with NBC News provoked a wave of declarations on social media from pro-life activists and pro-lifers who would turn their backs on the real estate mogul. This prompted the Trump campaign to go on damage control mode.

"Trump has not yet said how he will vote on the ballot initiative in Florida. He simply reiterated that he believes six weeks is too short," Trump campaign spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said in a statement.

The air was later cleared with the former president's Aug. 30 remarks.

Floridians to vote on the heartbeat law amendment in November

Floridians will vote on Amendment 4 when they head to the polling places on Election Day in November. The measure, which would provide a state constitutional right to abortion before viability, will require 60 percent of voters in favor of it to pass.

Formally titled "Amendment to Limit Government Interference with Abortion," Amendment 4 states that "no law shall prohibit, penalize, delay or restrict abortion before viability or when necessary to protect the patient's health, as determined by the patient’s healthcare provider." If enacted, it would require abortion to be allowed for any reason before fetal viability and render post-viability bans effectively meaningless by exempting any abortion that an abortionist claims is for "health" reasons.

While Trump's opposition to the amendment comes as a relief to many pro-lifers, it does not fully allay discontent with his opposition to federal pre-born protections he previously supported. These include support for mailing abortion pills into pro-life states to be taken without medical oversight and a new proposal to mandate insurance coverage for embryo-destructive in vitro fertilization treatments.

Live Action founder Lila Rose, who has received intense pushback for trying to pressure Trump to re-adopt his former pro-life stances, responded by thanking the former president. "If Trump starts talking like [he did] at the March for Life [and] said 'Together, we must protect, cherish and defend the dignity and sanctity of every human life,' he may just win this election," she noted.
