Trump triumphantly appears at RNC just two days after being shot in assassination attempt
By Laura Harris // Jul 18, 2024

Republican nominee and former President Donald Trump has made a dramatic appearance at the Republican National Convention (RNC) just two days after surviving an assassination attempt.

During the Pennsylvania rally on July 13, Trump was grazed in the right ear by a bullet fired by a gunman armed with an AR-15-style rifle while he was delivering his speech. Trump instinctively grabbed his bloodied right ear and dropped to the ground as multiple Secret Service agents rushed to the stage and Secret Service snipers eliminated would-be assassin Thomas Matthew Crooks.

The attempted assassination happened two days before the opening of the RNC in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, so Trump initially planned to delay his appearance at the convention. But he decided to appear as scheduled. (Related: Trump shot, survives ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT in Pennsylvania; shooter, one rally attendee killed, others wounded.)

"Based on yesterday's terrible events, I was going to delay my trip to Wisconsin, and The Republican National Convention, by two days, but have just decided that I cannot allow a 'shooter,' or potential assassin, to force change to scheduling, or anything else. Therefore, I will be leaving for Milwaukee, as scheduled, at 3:30 P.M. TODAY. Thank you! DJT," Trump wrote on his Truth Social account.

That same night, Trump arrived at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee to thunderous applause with a thick bandage over his right ear. The sound of country music star Lee Greenwood singing "God Bless the USA" greeted him as he entered the stadium.

Trump shook hands with conservative media personality Tucker Carlson, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) and others as he made his way to the stands. Republican delegates stood and cheered, while Trump smiled and waved as supporters chanted "USA" and "Fight! Fight! Fight," echoing Trump’s defiant words in the aftermath of the attack.

The Republican nominee, accompanied by his children and newly announced vice-presidential running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), took a seat in a VIP box. The convention attendees gave him a standing ovation, a powerful show of support for the former president who continues to command a loyal following despite the dangers he faces.

Trump will deliver a whole different speech after the assassination attempt against him

Trump, set to accept the GOP nomination on July 18 formally, said in an interview with the Washington Examiner that he has torn up the original speech he intended to deliver after the assassination attempt. Instead, he aims for a message that could potentially bring the country together.

"It is a chance to bring the country together," Trump stated. "I was given that chance."

Trump, historically known for his combative and grandiose speeches, has revealed in his interviews with the Washington Examiner and the New York Post that he plans to move away from his usual approach.

"I had all prepared an extremely tough speech, really good, all about the corrupt, horrible administration," Trump told the New York Post. "But I threw it away."

He stated his desire "to try to unite our country" but expressed skepticism, saying he doesn't "know if that's possible." Speaking with the Washington Examiner, Trump confirmed that his July 18 speech will be a "whole different speech now."
