Trump calls for RFK Jr. to receive Secret Service protection
By Ramon Tomey // Jul 19, 2024

Former President Donald Trump has called for independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (RFK Jr.) to receive Secret Service protection, following the July 13 assassination attempt on the real estate mogul.

Trump took to Truth Social to issue his call, writing: "In light of what is going on in the world today, I believe it is imperative that RFK Jr. receive Secret Service protection immediately. Given the history of the Kennedy family, this is the obvious right thing to do."

The late President John F. Kennedy, RFK Jr.'s uncle, was killed by Lee Harvey Oswald in 1963. Meanwhile, the late U.S. Sen. Bobby Kennedy Sr. (D-NY) – RFK Jr.'s father – was killed by Sirhan Sirhan five years later in 1968.

The independent presidential candidate lauded the Republican nominee's request in a post on X. "It is a hopeful sign for our country when a political opponent calls for one's protection. Maybe our country can unite after all," RFK Jr. wrote.

RFK Jr. earlier called for unity moments after the July 13 assassination attempt against Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. "Now is the time for every American who loves our country to step back from the division, renounce all violence and unite in prayer for [former] President Trump and his family," he wrote on X. According to Modernity News, RFK Jr. "has not been provided protection despite repeated requests from his team, and despite the fact that a man was arrested for intruding into his home twice on the same day last year."

This led journalist Adam Creighton of The Australian to comment on the matter. He wrote: "I just can't think of a reason why the Biden administration refuses RFK Jr. Secret Service protection, despite this family history and precedent. Tiny fiscal cost. Can you think of a reason?"

Biden admin eventually yields, grants Secret Service protection to RFK Jr.

The Biden administration ultimately yielded to Trump's request and granted Secret Service protection to the scion of the Kennedy family.

"In light of this weekend's events, the president has directed me to work with the Secret Service to provide protection to Robert [F.] Kennedy Jr.," Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas told members of the media on July 15.

Aside from RFK Jr., Mayorkas also confirmed "adjustments" to the security protection provided to Trump, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), who Trump picked as his running mate, will also get "the appropriate level of security."

The secretary also confirmed that an independent review of the July 13 assassination attempt will be conducted. This review, he explained, will "examine Secret Service's and other law enforcement's actions before, during and after the shooting."

The Biden administration is still deciding who will lead the review, according to POLITICO. Mayorkas did not give a specific timeline for the review's completion, saying only that he expected it to be up and running within days. He nevertheless continued that any conclusions will be made public.

The homeland security secretary also denounced conspiracy theories that have sprung up around the attack. According to him, suggestions that Biden or the Democratic Party were involved are "preposterous."

"It is also dangerous to propagate rumors that are so unequivocally false and provocative," said Mayorkas. But given the violent rhetoric espoused by the Left against Trump over the years, one cannot discount their involvement in the failed assassination attempt on the former president.
