Iran pledges ALL-OUT SUPPORT to Hezbollah if Israel invades Lebanon
By Kevin Hughes // Jul 08, 2024

An adviser to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has warned that Iran and the "axis of resistance" would provide all the support it can to Hezbollah if Israel begins an all-out attack against the group in Lebanon.

Kamal Kharazi, member of the Expediency Discernment Council and foreign affairs adviser to Khamenei, said Iran was "not interested" in a regional war and asked the United States to apply pressure on Israel to prevent an invasion of southern Lebanon.

Israeli political and military leaders have repeatedly threatened to invade Lebanon in recent months for Hezbollah's participation in the current conflicts between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

Some of the threats include destroying Beirut in the way the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has destroyed Gaza. The IDF has even authorized a war plan for an invasion of Lebanon.

Hezbollah has exchanged cross-border fire with Israel almost daily since Oct. 8, one day after Tel Aviv's war on Gaza began. The conflicts has remained mostly limited to areas close to the border between Israel and Lebanon.

When asked if Iran would support Hezbollah militarily in the event of a full-scale war with Israel, Kharazi stated, "All Lebanese people, Arab countries, and members of the axis of resistance will support Lebanon against Israel."

Iran to mobilize "Axis of Resistance" to defend Lebanon

The so-called "Axis of Resistance" is an informal grouping made up of Palestinian militant groups Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad in Gaza, the Houthi movement (formally Ansar Allah) in northern Yemen, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, Hezbollah in Lebanon and Iran's own Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. All of these groups heavily rely on political and material support from Iran and would no doubt come to Hezbollah's aid should Lebanon be invaded.

"There would be a chance of expansion of the war to the whole region, in which all countries, including Iran, would become engaged. In that situation, we would have no choice but to support Hezbollah by all means," Kharazi said. "The expansion of war is not in the interest of anyone – not Iran or the U.S."

In reply to Israeli threats of a full-blown invasion, Iran's latest mission to the United Nations warned of an "obliterating war," stating "all options" were on the agenda. (Related: If Israel attacks Lebanon, Iran says it will respond with “obliterating war”)

Tensions between Iran, the U.S. and Israel have risen since the Oct. 7 attack of Hamas and Israel's retaliatory assault in Gaza, with Iranian-supported militant groups launching attacks against the Jewish state and American soldiers in the region.

Aside from Hezbollah trading cross-border fire with Israel, Houthi rebels in Yemen have attacked ships in the Red Sea and launched drones and missiles at Israel, and Shia militants in Iraq and Syria have assaulted American troops and fired projectiles at Israel.

Iran and Israel also started missile attacks against each other in April which marked the first direct Iranian assault against Israel from its own soil.

Nonetheless, both sides wanted to de-escalate the tension, with the separate attacks deemed calibrated and creating limited destruction.

However, fears of a full-blown Israel-Hezbollah war have increased in the last few weeks amidst growing aggressive rhetoric from both camps, bringing up worries in the West about how Iran would respond.

Another Iranian official said Iran would be doubtful to instantly target Israel, instead assembling the organization of Iran-supported militant groups over the region that compose the axis of resistance.
