Republican legislator slams reporter who suggested Congress’ probes are political retaliation against Joe Biden
By Belle Carter // Jun 09, 2024

Rep. Scott Perry, a Republican from Pennsylvania, recently schooled a journalist who implied that the congressional inquiries the Congress was holding were political revenge on President Joe Biden. A video of the incident posted on X immediately went viral.

"What actual evidence do you have as opposed to allegations to show to the American public that would merit an actual impeachment inquiry of Joe Biden and prove that today isn't just about some of you..." the reporter's question started.

Perry briefly interrupted as he was able to predict the reporter's intent "Oh, I don't know," he said in a sarcastic tone. The reporter kept talking but the rest of the question was inaudible in the video except for the last part. "...McCarthy for the sake of exacting political revenge for the impeachment of Donald Trump?" the reporter finished asking.

The GOP congressman started his answer with: "This isn't about political revenge, we have the bank accounts, we can see… Ma'am, you can see that the homes the Bidens own cannot be afforded on a congressional or Senate salary."

Perry continued arguing that it's not normal for family members to receive millions of dollars from overseas interests or to have twenty shell companies. "These things are not normal and it alludes to not only just widespread corruption but money laundering if not influence peddling itself," he pointed out.

To further argue that the congressional hearings are not political retaliation against Biden's family and they warrant investigation, Perry cited how in 2018, then-former Vice President Biden boasted about how he was able to influence the Ukrainian government to take down ex-Ukrainian Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin.

During a Council on Foreign Relations panel, Biden said he threatened to withhold $1 billion worth of Congressionally-approved assistance for Ukraine if the then-Ukrainian president would not fire the prosecutor.

"'I'm leaving in six hours. If the prosecutor is not fired, you're not getting the money.' Well, son of a b----, he got fired," said Biden. "And they put in place someone who was solid at the time." During a tell-all interview with Fox News, Shokin confirmed he was fired at Biden's insistence because of his investigation into Burisma.

"I have said repeatedly in my previous interviews that [former Ukrainian President Petro] Poroshenko fired me at the insistence of Biden because I was investigating Burisma," he said. "[Poroshenko] understood and so did Biden that had I continued to oversee the investigation, we would have found the facts about the corrupt activities that they were engaging in."

Burisma is a holding company based in Kyiv, for a group of energy exploration and production companies. Presidential son Hunter Biden served on the company's board from April 2014 until he left the position in 2019. A copy of an unclassified Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) record indicated that a confidential human source was told that the younger Biden held a position on the board of directors so he would "protect us, through his dad, from all kinds of problems."

House Speaker Mike Johnson appoints Perry to the House Intelligence Committee

Meanwhile. Perry has also been recently appointed to the House Intelligence Committee by House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson.

"I am humbled by his confidence in me, my service to our Nation, and my experience in this arena," Perry said in a statement. "I look forward to providing not only a fresh perspective, but conducting actual oversight – not blind obedience to some facets of our Intel Community that all too often abuse their powers, resources, and authority to spy on the American people."

Perry's office has released a press statement touting his military service and his role serving on the Foreign Affairs and Oversight Committees, which he said provided him the "informed and unique perspective" needed to serve on the intel committee.

Perry, former chairman of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, will have oversight of federal intelligence agencies, including the FBI. That same agency seized Perry's cell phone in 2022 as part of the investigation into attempts to overturn the 2020 election. In December 2023, a federal judge ruled that he must disclose nearly 1,700 records from his cell phone to the investigation being conducted by special counsel Jack Smith.

He was one of two Republicans appointed to the intelligence committee last week, with the other being Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-TX). The two will fill the vacancies left by Reps. Chris Stewart (R-UT) and Mike Gallagher (R-WI),  resigned from office in 2023 and 2024, respectively.

Perry is now the third member of Pennsylvania's House delegation to serve on the committee, joining Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick and Chrissy Houlahan of the 1st and 6th districts, respectively.

The Pennsylvania congressman, who is seeking his seventh term in November, is being challenged by Democrat Janelle Stelson for the seat in south-central Pennsylvania. Stelson was recently named to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's Red to Blue program, an effort aimed to boost Democrats in competitive districts.
