Pro-life groups sound alarm about new Alberta abortion clinic offering chemical abortion drugs via TELEMEDICINE
By Ava Grace // May 09, 2024

An anti-abortion organization in the Canadian province of Alberta is sounding the alarm over a new facility in the province dedicated to offering telemedicine services for women who want at-home abortions, warning that it will not only lead to the deaths of the unborn but could also present severe risks for the women who are prescribed the medication.

This warning comes from the Campaign Life Coalition (CLC), which warned that easily providing non-surgical or chemical abortions through the new telemedicine abortion facility in the provincial capital of Calgary "is a recipe for disaster."

"Mixing chemical abortion with telemedicine is a recipe for disaster, certainly for the preborn baby but potentially for the mother as well," said CLC Director of Communications Pete Baklinski regarding the new telemedicine facility. The facility is called the Alberta Medical Abortion Clinic and it offers prescriptions for the abortifacient Mifegymiso after "virtual, telephone and in-person appointments to accommodate different preferences and circumstances" so that a person can "choose the option that best suits your needs." Chemical abortions can only be performed in the first few weeks of pregnancy.

The facility says it is not affiliated with Alberta Health Services; however, the provincial regulator does cover the cost of an abortion, chemical or otherwise.

Chemical abortions rife with dangerous complications for women

Baklinski told LifeSiteNews that the chemical abortifacient Mifegymiso – a mifepristone-misoprostol combination drug – is a troublesome drug that already has a long record of causing adverse reactions, such as "persistent or heavy vaginal bleeding" that can require "treatment with intravenous fluids or blood transfusion."

"Chemical abortion recklessly puts women's lives on the line. In the first place, pregnant women calling in for the abortion pill self-determine the gestational age of their baby. Complications can arise if she uses chemical abortion past the nine-week cut-off date set by Health Canada," he noted.

Baklinski said additional complications arise if the woman calling in for chemical abortion has an undetected ectopic pregnancy. "This can only be discovered through ultrasound. Left undetected and without medical intervention can be fatal for her," he noted.

Other side effects from the drug include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea as well as abdominal pain. Infection complications can even result in "fatal sepsis."

Baklinski warned that at least two women have "already died from chemical abortion" in Canada. "Some thought they were dying. Numerous women who experienced a chemical abortion have said they were unprepared for the pain and bleeding as well as the shock of seeing the visible tiny human being in embryonic form they had expelled," he said. "This product certainly has nothing to do with women's health or wellbeing."

Prolife Alberta, the only registered anti-abortion political party in the province, warned that research indicates that chemical abortions have a higher complication rate associated with them compared to surgical abortions.

"Apart from the obvious danger to the life of her baby, prescribing chemical abortions via telemedicine poses significant risks for the pregnant mother," warned the group. "In-person consultations are necessary to ensure proper medical evaluation and to address potential complications."
