Ronna McDaniel to leave Republican National Committee on MARCH 8
By Ramon Tomey // Feb 29, 2024

Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel has announced that she will vacate the position on March 8.

The Hill reported on the development in a Feb. 26 piece, citing a statement by McDaniel. She stated: "It has been the honor and privilege of my life to serve the RNC for seven years as chairwoman to elect Republicans and grow our party."

"I have decided to step aside at our Spring Training on March 8 in Houston to allow our nominee to select a chair of their choosing. The RNC has historically undergone change once we have a nominee, and it has always been my intention to honor that tradition."

The outgoing RNC head cited several examples of the GOP's successes during her roughly seven years on the job. These include the GOP winning back the House of Representatives in the 2022 midterm elections, the creation of an Election Integrity Department and a push for Republicans to vote early.

McDaniel, the niece of U.S. Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT), first became the RNC's chairwoman in 2017 with the backing of former President Donald Trump. She won reelection for the position four times, including a contentious election in 2023 where she won against California attorney Harmeet Dhillon and MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell. The Hill also noted that as the 2024 election neared, "her relationship with Trump was also strained as the former president pushed the RNC to cancel primary debates and back him." Aside from McDaniel, RNC Co-Chair Drew McKissick is also expected to step down on March 8. He said: "I look forward to working with the RNC and [former] President Trump's team to make sure that we win this November by taking back the White House [and] the Senate, and maintaining our majority in the House of Representatives."

Replacements for McDaniel and McKissick already lined up

"McDaniel's decision was not unexpected," The Hill pointed out. "She had reportedly planned to step down after the South Carolina primary."

The former president named Michael Whatley, the RNC's general counsel and current chairman of the North Carolina GOP, as successor to McDaniel. He also named his campaign advisor and daughter-in-law Lara Trump as the RNC co-chair, succeeding McKissick. Moreover, Trump campaign senior advisor Chris LaCivita was named as the RNC's chief operating officer.

"Chairwoman McDaniel has led our party with grace and vision, and has been a true friend to me and the North Carolina GOP," Whatley said in a Feb. 26 statement. "Her leadership on election integrity, minority outreach, voter contact and so much more will be felt not only in the 2024 election but in elections to come."

The former president issued his endorsement of Whatley and Lara, the wife of his son Eric, in a statement shared on Feb. 12.

"[Whatley] has been with me from the beginning, has done a great job in his home state of North Carolina and is committed to election integrity – which we must have to keep fraud out of our election so it can't be stolen," the elder Trump wrote.

"Lara is an extremely talented communicator and is dedicated to all that MAGA stands for. She has told me she wants to accept this challenge and (that) would be great."

The former president also endorsed LaCivita in the statement, noting that he "will manage the RNC's day-to-day operations so it will become a fighting machine for 2024 and use all the tools available to win for the American people."

"This group of three is highly talented, battle-tested and smart. They have my complete and total endorsement to lead the RNC."
