This is according to the National Right to Life Committee's (NRLC) "State of Abortion" annual report released in February, which notes the legislative developments that have arisen in the state and federal level in the first year following the Supreme Court's Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade. (Related: Susan Swift: About 98% of abortions in America are just for convenience.)
The report noted that the annual number of abortions was on the rise in the years leading up to Dobbs, largely due to a highly intensified promotion of the abortion pill, which made it easier for women to terminate pregnancies.
But the Dobbs decision and the protective laws passed by multiple states since have saved the lives of over 89,000 unborn children in the United States.
"Since the Supreme Court's decision in Dobbs, the state of abortion in the United States has changed dramatically as many states have enacted laws to protect unborn children and their mothers from the tragedy of abortion," said NRLC President Carol Tobias.
NRLC used data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, research and policy organization Guttmacher Institute and pro-abortion non-profit Society of Family Planning. Still, there were more than 900,000 innocent babies killed through abortion in 2023, according to the NRLC's estimates.
The pro-life group is realistic about the work that needs to be done and how the pro-abortion movement is doing everything it can to keep killing babies. This includes "old clinic employees" functioning as "travel agents."

"The industry has made no secret of the fact that they invested a great deal of money and effort in setting up an extensive and expensive referral system," the report stated. "This is one where they made arrangements for vulnerable pregnant women from states with legal protections for unborn children to travel to clinics in neighboring or other states with abortion-supportive policies."
"They may begin running out of money at some point, but early on, private abortion funds were spending tens of millions of dollars paying for or at least supplementing that travel or even helping to cover the costs of the abortion," the report continued.
State governments are actively undermining efforts to curtail abortion. The city government of Chicago set aside $500,000 in 2022 for abortion providers "to scale up access to reproductive healthcare for those who are going to need it."
The NRLC noted that Chicago's initiative is just one of many programs enacted all over the country to prepare for "the higher volume from out-of-state clients."
Among other ways these liberal governments are undermining pro-life legislation is by building "high-volume mega-clinics just across state lines, and setting up mobile clinics to patrol the boundaries in border states."
The NRLC has also warned about how the administration of President Joe Biden has sought to ignore federal law and use executive orders to make it easier for dangerous abortifacient drugs to be mailed across the country and for pharmacies to hand them out with minimal safeguards.
"Given the current composition of Congress, a national law protecting preborn children and their mothers from the tragedy of abortion is not likely to happen in the foreseeable future," the group wrote. "But there are still many life-affirming policies that can be enacted at the federal level that will reduce the number of abortions, help mothers and save lives."
Included in this list are bans on federal funding of abortion, "recognizing the role of parents to be involved before their minor daughter could get an abortion," and protections for infants who survive an abortion.
They also called for protective protocols on chemical abortions to reduce the risk of death and injury to the mother; a national abortion reporting law; and conscience rights protections.
