According to Law Enforcement Today, Mayorkas' impeachment has taken the dominant position on the House Homeland Security Committee (HSC) under its chairman, Tennessee Rep. Mark Green. During a Jan. 10 hearing, the HSC set to evaluate the extent to which Mayorkas' "failed leadership and refusal to enforce the laws passed by Congress" has impacted America's national security.
A separate report by Just The News said the Jan. 10 hearing would be the first of three scheduled for that month. This followed the HSC's release of the fifth report outlining the secretary's policies. The committee found in part that "the causes, costs and consequences of the crisis at the southwest border and how the reckless decision-making and legally dubious policies of Mayorkas and President Joe Biden have precipitated the worst border crisis in American history."
"The [HSC's] nearly year-long investigation into Mayorkas made one thing clear: He has refused to enforce the laws of Congress and fulfill his oath of office," Republicans in the HSC posted on X. "This committee [would] begin impeachment proceedings … to hold Mayorkas accountable."
Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene put in her two cents on the matter.
"Mayorkas said he is 'offended' by the term 'invasion' that he is purposefully facilitating at our southern border. I had only one thing to say in response: Resign or we will impeach you. Well, he hasn't resigned – so … we start the process of impeachment," Greene said.

"For almost three years, the American people have demanded an end to the unprecedented crisis at the southwest border. They have also rightly called for Congress to hold accountable those responsible. That's why the [HSC] led a comprehensive investigation into the causes, costs and consequences of this crisis."
The congresswoman for the Peach State continued: "Our investigation made clear that this crisis finds its foundation in Mayorkas' decision-making and refusal to enforce the laws passed by Congress. His failure to fulfill his oath of office demands accountability. The bipartisan House vote in November [2023] to refer articles of impeachment to [the HSC] only served to highlight the importance of our taking up the impeachment process – which is what we will begin doing." Mayorkas held a press conference on Jan. 8 that touched on the border situation. He attempted to defend his record during the press briefing, pushing back against the GOP's claims that he sat idly by and allowed illegals to enter the nation illegally.
"After the ending of Title 42 in May [2023], … DHS removed or returned more [illegal immigrants] without a basis to remain in the U.S. than in any other five-month period in the last 10 years," said Mayorkas. "The majority of all migrants encountered at the southwest border throughout this administration has been removed, returned or expelled – a majority of them."
The secretary then addressed the House's GOP claims in the presser, continuing: "Some have accused DHS [the Department of Homeland Security] of not enforcing our nation's laws. This could not be further from the truth."
"Having begun my public service career as a federal prosecutor for 12 years, ultimately serving as the U.S. attorney, there is nothing I take more seriously than our responsibility to uphold the law. The men and women of DHS are working around the clock to do so."
But as observed by the RNC Research account, Mayorkas tacitly avoided a question regarding his impending impeachment inquiry during the press briefing. He walked away when a reporter brought up the issue.
