REPORT: CCP saw Tim Walz as a “target” to help push Chinese influence in Washington
By Arsenio Toledo // Nov 01, 2024

An internal report from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shows that intelligence officials were concerned with how the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) saw Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as a prime "target" for its influence operations in the United States.

Internal DHS communications note that Homeland Security agents were gravely concerned with the possibility that, should Vice President Kamala Harris win the election, the CCP could have a backdoor into the White House through Walz.

"[Walz's] got the VP [nomination]. You all have no idea how this feeds into what PRC [People's Republic of China] has been doing here with him and [local governments]," one DHS official wrote on Aug. 6 in an internal "Nation State Threat – National Functional Team" chat.

"It's seriously a line of the intel," the official added. "Target someone who is perceived they can get to D.C."

A whistleblower notes that officials from DHS's Office of Intelligence and Analysis and Homeland Security investigations are involved in the work of investigating the connections between the CCP, the State of Minnesota and Walz.

This same whistleblower warned that the DHS also has information on Walz that it is unwilling to divulge in both classified and unclassified documents.

DHS accused of helping cover up information on Walz's CCP ties

The whistleblower divulged all of this information to the House Oversight Committee back in September. The committee only published these internal communications on Tuesday, Oct. 29, in an open letter to Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, who earlier refused to voluntarily provide the committee with information following a subpoena.

The subpoena, issued on Sept. 30, requested documents related to the potential connections between Walz and the CCP. (Related: Report: Tim Walz approved funding for Minnesota lab that worked with notorious Wuhan facility.)

House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY) accused Mayorkas and the DHS of being "wholly unresponsive" and warned that this "raises serious concerns about the Department's fulfillment of its mission to resolutely protect the nation's homeland."

"The Committee is releasing [the internal messages] as an example of communications within DHS's possession in which DHS officials express concern about the CCP targeting politicians and their influence operations at the state and local levels – and specifically, concerns about the CCP's influence operations as they relate to Gov. Walz," Comer wrote in the letter to Mayorkas.

Republicans in the House of Representatives have warned of the potential national security issues arising from Walz's close ties to China. He taught American history and English at a high school in Foshan, Guangdong, he had a former relationship with a woman he met in China back in 1989 and he has visited the communist nation at least 30 times, a dozen of those visits occurred while he was serving in the Army National Guard.

"Any individual traveling dozens of times to an adversary nation in a personal capacity while having access to classified information poses an obvious security risk," warned Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN).
