It has been reported that federal prosecutors have filed nine new tax-related criminal charges, including three felony counts, as part of the Department of Justice's years-long probe on the 53-year-old presidential son.
The latest indictment is for his failure to file and pay taxes, tax evasion and filing a false return. The 56-page court document alleges that Hunter "engaged in a four-year scheme to not pay at least $1.4 million in self-assessed federal taxes he owed for tax years 2016 through 2019" and that he "spent millions of dollars on an extravagant lifestyle rather than paying his tax bills." David Weiss, who was nominated as U.S. attorney by Trump in 2017 and designated as special counsel by Attorney General Merrick Garland in August to oversee the investigations on Hunter, filed the charges. District Judge Mark C. Scarsi has been assigned to the case.
Abbe Lowell, Hunter's defense attorney, claimed in a statement that the charges were politically motivated. "Based on the facts and the law, if Hunter's last name was anything other than Biden, the charges in Delaware, and now in California, would have not been brought," Lowell said, adding that Weiss "bowed to Republican pressure" and that "no new evidence" has been found.

Hunter was previously federally charged in a Delaware court in September with three criminal counts for lying about his drug use when purchasing a firearm in 2018, to which he pleaded not guilty. Those charges, in addition to the latest tax-related charges, come just a few months after the collapse of a misdemeanor plea deal Hunter was set to agree with prosecutors in an attempt to avoid jail time.
These charges are set to cast a legal shadow over the 2024 presidential election, which is expected to see Joe going up against Trump.
Trump is ahead of his rival in state and nationwide polling: Morning Consult reported that Trump is leading Biden in six of seven crucial swing states; CNN reported that Trump is leading Biden by three points among "men of color" voters; and NBC News reported that Trump is leading Biden by two points.
"What they're trying to do is they're trying to kill me, knowing that it will be a pain greater than my father could be able to handle – and so, therefore, destroying a presidency in that way," Hunter said in a podcast with musician Moby.
Hunter also has a role in the recent impeachment inquiry against his father. The House voted 221-212 to authorize the probe into the Biden family's dealings.
"Evidence uncovered has shown a very disturbing trend by the Biden family. We've spent months accumulating evidence. We have a simple question I think an overwhelming majority of Americans have," said Rep. James Comer, R-Ky. "What did the Bidens do to receive the tens of millions of dollars from our enemies around the world?"
