RED VS. BLUE: DeSantis, Newsom agree to debate in November
By Ramon Tomey // Sep 29, 2023

The governors of California and Florida have agreed to face off in a debate scheduled in November, with Fox News' Sean Hannity moderating.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and California Gov. Gavin Newsom will face off in Georgia during a 90-minute televised debate, LifeSiteNews reported. The Nov. 30 engagement dubbed the "red state vs. blue state" debate will involve the two state governors presenting "their divergent visions to the millions of nightly viewers who regularly tune in to Hannity's show."

"I'm looking forward to providing viewers with an informative debate about the everyday issues and governing philosophies that impact the lives of every American," Hannity said in a statement. The finalized debate schedule comes as DeSantis and Newsom previously agreed to debate each other earlier this summer.

The California governor suggested that no audience members be invited and that each candidate would give opening remarks no longer than four minutes. Meanwhile, the Florida governor proposed having a live audience, with tickets distributed evenly between the two sides, alongside a video lasting no longer than two minutes in lieu of opening remarks.

Andrew Romeo, a spokesman for the Florida governor, told ABC News in a statement that comparing the Golden State and the Sunshine State "demonstrates that DeSantis is right – decline is merely a choice."

"DeSantis rejects that choice and, [if elected] as president, will reverse America's decline," Romeo continued. "We look forward to putting DeSantis' record of success up against Newsom's track record."

"We've agreed to the debate – provided there is no cheering section, no hype videos or any of the other crutches DeSantis requested," Newsom's spokesman Nathan Click meanwhile said in a separate statement. "We want a real debate, not a circus."

DeSantis, Newsom polar opposites

Just like the locations of their respective states, the Republican DeSantis and the Democratic Newsom are polar opposites when it comes to their leadership.

The issue of grooming is one where both governors have different takes. Newsom has defended the use of books with explicitly sexual descriptions in schools, something that DeSantis has opposed. The Florida governor has also challenged abortion, having recently signed a bill that prohibits infanticide within six weeks – around the time a heartbeat is detected. In contrast, Newsom has advertised deep blue California as a "sanctuary state" for those wanting to murder children in the womb.

Immigration is another policy that the two governors butt heads with. Newsom accused DeSantis of "kidnapping" for sending illegal aliens to California. However, DeSantis only complied with the Golden State enacting laws to make itself a "sanctuary state" that would accept illegals.

California and Florida also chose opposite strategies to follow during the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Newsom followed the path of medical tyranny by imposing draconian lockdowns and pushing for vaccine mandates. In contrast, DeSantis rolled back Florida's statewide lockdown and fought vaccine mandates for both the public and private sectors.

Aside from their stances on certain issues, there is also a clear difference between the two. DeSantis is currently a candidate for the 2024 presidential elections under the Republican Party, albeit a distant second to former President Donald Trump. Meanwhile, Newsom has dismissed any plans to run for the top post in the land. (Related: Newsom receives millions in fundraising and campaigns outside of California, but denies having any interest in running for president.)
