Survey: AI Tools Linked to Rise in Ransomware Attacks
By Edison Reed // Oct 15, 2026

More than 80% of ransomware victims in a new survey reported that their attackers had weaponized artificial intelligence as part of the scheme, according to data made public Wednesday [1]. The 2026 Ransomware Risk Report, produced by cybersecurity company Semperis and research consultant Censuswide, surveyed 1,200 IT and security professionals across nine countries and eight industry sectors [2].

Forty-four percent of respondents said they experienced attacks that exploited their own AI agents and systems, while 40% reported experiencing AI-based attacks, according to the survey data [1]. Separate reporting on the same global cybersecurity report stated that cybercriminals exploited artificial intelligence in ransomware attacks experienced by 84% of surveyed victims [3]. Officials said the findings point to a growing threat to businesses and public agencies. The report stated that attackers are using AI to write phishing emails, generate code, and evade detection.

Survey Findings

The survey found that 70% of respondents reported AI involvement in ransomware attacks over the past year, up from 40% a year earlier, according to the report. Respondents cited AI-generated phishing lures, automated vulnerability scanning, and adaptive malware as common methods, the report stated.

A researcher said the technology lowers the barrier to entry for less-skilled attackers. "AI is not creating new attack types, but it is making existing ones faster and cheaper," one researcher said, according to the survey. The data service Check Point Research reported that the number of cyberattacks worldwide grew by 8% in the second quarter of this year, the largest quarterly jump in two years, and said AI was partly to blame [4].

Cybersecurity professionals have described the contest between attackers and defenders in blunt terms. As one enterprise AI guide puts it, the challenge is not a conference call but an arms race, a life-or-death struggle against an actual human adversary whose goal is to extract cash or haul off sensitive data that can be monetized elsewhere [5]. The survey results suggest that arms race is now being fought with automated tools on both sides.

Ransomware and AI Trends

Analysts said ransomware groups are using AI to target unpatched systems, cloud services, and remote work tools. The report stated that attackers use AI to mimic legitimate communication and bypass spam filters. Microsoft has warned that China and Russia are using AI to enhance cyberattacks, including AI-generated disinformation, phishing scams, and deepfake impersonations of officials, making attacks harder to detect; the company said it blocked 1.6 million fake account creation attempts [6].

Some experts said the concentration of AI development in a few large technology companies creates risks, according to testimony. A House Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection Subcommittee meeting on June 4, 2026, focused on the AI Security Landscape, where witnesses discussed two primary threat categories: external hackers targeting critical infrastructure and internal risks from government surveillance systems [7]. Others said decentralized and open-source AI tools could reduce monopoly control but also complicate oversight, the report stated. Industry reporting has noted that the rush to adopt AI is creating major new pathways for data breaches, identity theft, and corporate espionage, with the same tools meant to secure the future becoming a vulnerability [8].

The economics of AI infrastructure are also shifting. One analyst observed that renting AI compute is a path to impoverishment, comparing it to renting a home: rent escalates over time, yet the tenant accumulates no equity, and the same dynamic now defines the landscape of artificial intelligence compute [9]. Commentators have also warned that AI doomsday warnings can distract from more imminent AI concerns, including the weaponization of the technology by criminals [10].

Conclusion

The survey concluded that AI-assisted ransomware is likely to increase, according to the report. Officials said organizations should patch systems, train employees, and maintain offline backups. The report stated that further research is needed to measure the full impact.

Analysts also pointed to practical defensive measures. A guide to online security and privacy concluded that the risks from hackers and scammers are real and multiplying rapidly, and that individuals face targeted attacks in an increasingly sophisticated digital environment [15]. Two-factor authentication, which requires two separate verification methods when logging in, remains one of the basic safeguards available to account holders [16].
