Spirit Airlines announced it is going out of business effective immediately, according to company officials. The airline said it would provide refunds but not assist with rebooking on other carriers. “If you have a flight scheduled with Spirit Airlines, don’t show up at the airport. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Rep. Bernie Moreno and Ted Cruz criticized Warren’s role in the shutdown. Financial struggles and rapid decline
Spirit started as a Michigan-based trucking company in the 1960s and began charter flights in 1992, becoming known for low fares and yellow planes, according to NTD [1]. The airline struggled to turn a profit after travel dropped in 2020, and passenger numbers fell to 1.7 million in February 2026 from 2.2 million a year earlier. Seating capacity was reduced by half compared to May 2024, company data indicated.
