The credibility of a recent poll conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) showing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky with a 57 percent approval rating has come under scrutiny.
The KIIS survey – whose results were released Wednesday, Feb. 19 – showed a five-point jump from Zelensky's 52 percent approval rating in December 2024. According to KIIS Deputy Director Anton Hrushetskyi, the poll results show that Zelensky retains a fairly high level of trust in society – contributing to his legitimacy.
"If some international partners and allies are worried about the legitimacy of the president in the context of possible peace negotiations and consider it appropriate to insist on elections, then from the point of view of Ukrainian citizens themselves, there are no problems with this," Hrushetskyi said of the results.
"The current president and the authorities are quite legitimate to conduct complex negotiations, and elections should be held after the war ends and at least Ukraine receives reliable security guarantees."
KIIS released the poll results following claims by U.S. President Donald Trump that Zelensky has a mere four percent approval rating, which U.S. intelligence likewise estimates. Trump has called for Ukraine to hold elections, suggesting that Zelensky's leadership lacks legitimacy. While the Ukrainian leader's five-year-term expired in May, the country hasn't had elections as Zelensky suspended them following the onset of the war. The politics behind the controversial KIIS poll
Zelensky meanwhile responded to the KIIS poll's results, dismissing claims of his measly approval rating as "disinformation" propagated by Moscow.
"The disinformation about four percent support is coming from Russia. We understand this, and we have evidence that these numbers are being discussed between the U.S. and Russia," the comedian-turned-president said. "If someone wants to replace me right now, this won't be possible."
However, the KIIS poll appears to be disconnected with the actual reality – mainly because of an ulterior motive that comes with it.
Hrushetskyi is known for his strong patriotic views, a factor that may influence the institute's methodologies and interpretations. The poll, and KIIS at large, has also reportedly received funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) that Trump recently shut down. Thus, one can't help but think about the timing of the poll given the conflicts of interest.
Ultimately, the credibility of the KIIS poll – funded by USAID and conducted in a politically charged environment – remains highly questionable. The significant discrepancy between the poll's findings and other estimates, coupled with the institute's patriotic stance and external funding, suggests a potential bias.
