The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) has disclosed that it was struggling to implement a massive $48.8 million budget cut forced upon it by Mayor Karen Bass just days before a series of catastrophic wildfires broke out last week.
The leaked Jan. 6 department memo states that a worst-case budget scenario – meaning no relief from the mayor – would have resulted in the closure of up to 16 fire stations.
The fires, which began on Jan. 8, quickly raged out of control, burning tens of thousands of acres within days. Two of the largest fires, in Pacific Palisades and Altadena, remain zero percent contained, posing a significant threat to residents and property.
According to the leaked memo, the LAFD is facing an unprecedented challenge. The department was already aware of a $17 million budget cut in 2024, which included reductions in overtime pay, fire prevention and training programs. The additional $48.8 million cut has exacerbated the situation, leaving the department scrambling to maintain essential services.
"We are operating under severe constraints," said a senior LAFD official, who requested anonymity. "The budget cuts have forced us to make difficult decisions that could compromise our ability to respond to emergencies effectively."
The situation has been further complicated by Bass' Democratic Party allies, who have attempted to downplay the funding reductions. Victor Shi, a former staffer for Kamala Harris's presidential campaign, posted a misleading claim on X, formerly known as Twitter, stating that Bass had actually increased the LAFD budget by $50 million.
"For fact's sake: There was NO $17 million cut to the Los Angeles Fire Department budget this year. In fact, there was a $50 million INCREASE in the Los Angeles Fire Department," Shi wrote. However, this statement is at odds with the information provided by the LAFD and other independent sources. The misinformation campaign surrounding the budget cuts has added to the public's confusion and frustration. However, the situation has taken an even more concerning turn with the malfunctioning of the Los Angeles emergency alert system. In the last 24 hours, several inadvertent alerts have been sent out across the metropolitan area with false evacuation notices. Late Thursday evening, a notice went out to the entirety of Los Angeles County incorrectly telling all residents to evacuate.
"It's a disaster," said a local resident who received the false evacuation notice. "We were all packed up and ready to go, only to find out that it was a mistake. It's just adding to the chaos and fear."
It is currently unknown if the technical problems faced by the alert system also stem from budget cuts enacted by Bass. If true, this would further highlight the far-reaching consequences of the city's financial decisions.
As the wildfires continue to burn, the city of Los Angeles is facing a critical moment. The LAFD's struggle to implement the massive budget cuts, coupled with the misinformation campaign and the malfunctioning of the emergency alert system, has raised serious questions about the city's preparedness and the accountability of its leadership.
"The mayor and her administration need to be held accountable for the decisions that have led to this situation," said a local fire chief, who also requested anonymity. "The safety and well-being of our residents are at stake, and we need immediate action to address these issues."
As the fires continue to rage and the city grapples with the aftermath of the budget cuts, the public is left to question the future of fire safety in Los Angeles and the role of elected officials in ensuring the well-being of their constituents.
