DOGE leaders Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy present vision for government reform to Congress
By Laura Harris // Dec 09, 2024

President-elect Donald Trump's appointed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) leaders, Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, have presented their vision for government reform to Congress.

On Nov. 13, Trump appointed Musk and Ramaswamy to lead DOGE, the new department that will work with the White House and the Office of Management and Budget to "drive large-scale structural reform and create an entrepreneurial approach" to government. (Related: Canadian group urging Trudeau to adopt Trump's DOGE initiative to curb wasteful government spending.)

"Together, these two wonderful Americans will pave the way for my administration to dismantle government bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures and restructure federal agencies – essential to the 'Save America' Movement," Trump announced on his Truth Social platform that day.

In line with this, Musk and Ramaswamy presented their agenda in Congress on Dec. 5.

That day, Musk and Ramaswamy detailed the agenda of the department to reduce the federal workforce by 75 percent, cut federal spending by $2 trillion and eliminate several agencies, including the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. They also proposed the abolishment of outdated regulations, the enforcement of strict in-office attendance for federal employees and the relocation of agencies outside Washington, D.C., to decentralize power. Additionally, they aim to seek executive authority to nullify unnecessary regulations and modernize government functions.

Musk and Ramaswamy have echoed these plans in their social media posts, podcasts, op-ed articles, books and speeches. Trump, along with Musk and Ramaswamy, has pledged to deliver a "sleeker, more efficient government" by July 4, 2026.

Greene: DOGE is the answer to bringing efficiency back to Washington

The formation of DOGE has already galvanized action in Congress, with key Republican lawmakers forming specialized caucuses to support its objectives.

Representatives Aaron Bean (R-FL) and Pete Sessions (R-TX) announced the creation of the House DOGE Caucus. This announcement quickly gained traction with additional members like Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ) and Ralph Norman (R-SC). Representative Jared Moskowitz (D-FL), a Democrat, has also voiced his support for bipartisan cooperation to address inefficiencies in federal spending.

"If there are people with legitimate suggestions on how we can improve government efficiency, maybe bring technology to government, figure out where there's waste and fraud and save the American taxpayer dollars, we should do that," Moskowitz said on Morning Edition Thursday. "And it shouldn't be a partisan issue."

In the Senate, a similar caucus led by Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) includes prominent members such as John Cornyn (R-TX), Ted Budd (R-NC) and Rick Scott (R-FL). Both chambers are poised to back legislation and oversight efforts aligned with DOGE's mission.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) expressed strong support for the initiative in a social media statement, praising the Trump administration for prioritizing government efficiency.

In turn, they formed the DOGE House Oversight Subcommittee, chaired by Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), which will lead investigations into government inefficiencies. Greene pledged to root out wasteful spending and corruption.

"Our federal government has ballooned into a bureaucratic monstrosity," Greene stated in a recent interview. "DOGE is the answer to bringing efficiency back to Washington."
