If the current trajectory of the conflict in Ukraine continues, Russia is likely to emerge victorious. Ukraine's only chance of winning would be for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to intervene directly in the conflict.
If Ukraine continues launching long-range missiles – supplied by NATO – into Russian territory, the Russian response will grow increasingly intense. At some point, Russia may take action so severe that it provides NATO with justification to enter the war. However, NATO's direct involvement in a conflict with Russia could escalate into a nuclear war, leading to the deaths of hundreds of millions of people. Reports indicate that Russia is making significant territorial gains in Ukraine, advancing at the fastest rate since the beginning of the conflict in late February 2022. In November, Russian forces seized 280 square miles of land in Ukraine, roughly larger than the land area of Singapore (277 square miles).
Russian President Vladimir Putin has insisted that Russian forces are advancing more effectively and that Russia will accomplish all its objectives in Ukraine, although these objectives remain vaguely defined. Ukrainian forces are outmatched and have been severely worn down by over two years of fighting. If things remain as they are, Russia will continue to gain ground.
Currently, Russia controls approximately 18 percent of internationally recognized Ukrainian territory, including Crimea, more than 80 percent of the disputed Donbas region – which covers the Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts – over 70 percent of the southern oblasts of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia and nearly three percent of the eastern Kharkiv Oblast.
The last time Russia made massive gains in Ukraine in such a short time was in March 2022 when Russia took control of 17,540 square miles of Ukrainian territory and had even threatened to take control of the capital of Kyiv.
Ukrainian long-range missile strikes a reaction to its severe losses on the battlefield
In response to its long string of losses, Ukraine's Western allies attempted to alter the course of the conflict by providing Ukraine with long-range missiles and allowing them to be used against strikes on Russian territory. However, Russia has repeatedly warned that such actions will provoke severe retaliation.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that missile strikes deep inside Russian territory represent an escalation, and Russia has promised appropriate responses. Russia's new Oreshnik missile system is a game-changer, with the ability to carry multiple submunitions capable of devastating targets through kinetic impact and extreme heat. The U.S. has no comparable weapon and is behind Russia in hypersonic missile technology, an area where the U.S. has no operational systems.
The Oreshnik missile, which can also carry nuclear warheads, is a critical development. Analysts have warned that American anti-missile defense systems like Aegis, THAAD and Patriot are no match for it – making Russia the sole owner of the most advanced missile system globally, far surpassing stagnant U.S. missile technology, which still relies on outdated systems from the 1970s and 1980s.
