Strange blue orb seen speeding past New York City skies
By Kevin Hughes // Nov 27, 2024

A mysterious orb-like object was seen flying over the Hudson River and past Lower Manhattan in a strange video taken by a local news helicopter.

Fox 5 news report that aired Monday, Nov. 18, accidentally caught the object soaring in the crystal-clear New York sky. The footage was shot as part of a report regarding New York City's congestion pricing program. It caught the object making a curving path in the direction of the news helicopter, crossing from the New Jersey side of the Hudson toward Lower Manhattan before disappearing out of frame at rapid speed.

The orb looks white in the distance and assumes a blue tint as it appears to get closer to the camera. The spot appears to outrun every boat on the Hudson and rapidly curves its way past the news helicopter's camera.

A representative for Fox 5's "Good Day New York," which initially aired the clip, stated they couldn't say when the footage was recorded but that it was probably within the last calendar year.

"Good Day New York" staff have been adamant that the footage has not been tampered with by digital editors.

Speculations abound regarding what the orb really was

Some have speculated the image could be a drone that appears to be moving faster than it really is due to the speed of the helicopter and the movement of the camera frame. (Related: Pentagon investigating reports of UFOs turning off nuclear warheads, shooting test missiles.)

"To me, it looks like a balloon or something fairly small, not a tiny spacecraft piloted by aliens," said "Good Day New York" anchor Dan Bowens during the newscast, explaining that a viewer had sent him the clip and asked for his thoughts. "It could also be a drone, but it seemed too small."

Bowens consulted with the show's director and control room team to review the footage. "We also looked at it from a different feed in our newsroom. It didn't show up [in other cameras]," he reported, leading members of the news team to speculate that the orb may have been a transmission issue on the receiving end of the camera.

Avi Loeb, a theoretical physician, cosmologist and Harvard University professor, told the New York Post: "This is most likely an optical artifact from the helicopter glass in front of the camera, namely a bright spot from the reflection of sunlight as the camera gradually changes its orientation relative to the sun and the ground. But even if it was a real object, the apparent speed is of an order the speed of sound and not extraordinary."

Agreeing with Loeb was retired United States Navy Rear Adm. Tim Gallaudet, CEO of marine technology consulting firm Ocean STL.

"For several reasons, [it] looks like an artifact and not an actual UAP," said Gallaudet, who used the acronym for "unidentified aerial phenomenon."
