Gaza Health Ministry issues “final distress call” for Kamal Adwan Hospital as Israel turns facility into kill zone
By Kevin Hughes // Nov 07, 2024

The Gaza Health Ministry on Monday, Nov. 4, released a "final distress call" for Kamal Adwan Hospital, which has been under brutal attack by the Israeli army for the past couple of weeks.

"Perhaps a last distress call: The occupation forces continue to heavily bombard and destroy Kamal Adwan Hospital, affecting all of its facilities. There are numerous injuries among the medical staff and patients, and the medical teams are unable to move between the hospital departments or save their injured colleagues," the statement read. "It appears that a decision has been made to execute all the staff who refused to evacuate the hospital." Over the past few days, the hospital has been hit by heavy artillery fire, which caused injuries to patients and staff, including those in the pediatrics ward and the intensive care unit (ICU). Doctors told reporters that a four-day-old child was the lone survivor of an Israeli attack at the hospital's ICU.

The ministry said staff are unable to move between hospital departments and cannot rescue their wounded colleagues as Israeli troops continue to "bomb and destroy" the building.

"The Israeli military has banned the World Health Organization (WHO) and other medical missions from reaching the hospital. It is also preventing anyone from the outskirts of the hospital from reaching it for medical assistance," Al Jazeera correspondent Hani Mahmoud reported on Monday evening from Deir al-Balah in central Gaza.

"There is not one single ambulance left that’s operating in northern Gaza. There's an acute shortage of all basic medical supplies, and the hospital has basically turned more into a graveyard than a health facility," Mahmoud added.

Israeli forces on October 25 attacked Kamal Adwan and kidnapped over 30 medical staff, leaving only two doctors inside the only health center in the north that has any capability to deal with the rash of wounded Palestinians.

Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the hospital's director, was released alone and later found out that the invading Israeli troops had killed his eight-year-old son.

"Israeli artillery shells are falling on us from all directions, and drone aircraft are firing on anyone who moves," Safiya told reporters on Sunday, Nov. 3. "We are experiencing a genocide inside the hospital."

Safiya added that the attack was carried out during a visit by a WHO delegation.

Israel has turned northern Gaza into an "extermination zone"

Since the beginning of October, Israel has turned northern Gaza into an "extermination zone" by trapping tens of thousands of Palestinians.

Search and rescue teams who are also under continuous attack have recovered the bodies of no less than 1,800 victims during that period. The Israeli military has admitted targeting the hospitals deliberately, often claiming without proof that Hamas fighters are utilizing them as bases.

Gaza hospitals are usually filled with patients and displaced families whose homes have been devastated. Moreover, no aid in any form has been permitted into northern Gaza for the past 30 days.

United Nations officials recently warned that every person in northern Gaza is at "imminent risk" of dying.
