The notorious "Yacht Killer" of California has received taxpayer-funded gender reassignment surgery.
In 2008, Skylar Preciosa Deleon, born John Jacobson Jr., was sentenced to death in California for the brutal murder of married couple Thomas and Jackie Hawks. In 2004, Deleon, his now-ex-wife Jennifer Deleon and three accomplices – Alonso Machain, Myron Gardner Sr. and John Fitzgerald Kennedy – tricked the Hawks into meeting on their 55-foot yacht under the pretense of buying the boat.
Once aboard, Deleon used a stun gun to incapacitate the couple, tied them to the anchor of the vessels, forced them to sign over their assets and threw them overboard to their deaths.
Deleon was arrested in 2005 when he was attempting to flee to Mexico. The rest of the group followed and all were charged with multiple counts of special circumstances murder, including financial gain, with both Deleon and Kennedy facing additional charges related to previous felonies.
Deleon disclosed in a letter to the Washington Free Beacon that he began receiving hormones treatment while sitting on death row at San Quentin in 2009. Deleon even revealed that the state financed his gender transition surgery and breast augmentation in 2023.
"First, I did receive Gender Affirming Surgery and Breast Augmentation on Apr. 5th, 2023. I began transitioning when I first got to San Quentin. I started hormones in 2009 shortly after being evaluated. Next, I have changed my name back to Skylar Deleon and I changed my middle name to Sophia," he wrote.

Gayle O'Neill, the mother of Jackie, expressed outrage at the California government's decision to allow such surgeries, pinning the blame on Vice President Kamala Harris. "I don't know what right [Harris] had to decide that he gets surgeries now. I mean, why should they get all these benefits? They killed people, right? Took people's lives," said O'Neill. "He killed my daughter and son-in-law, and now he gets what he wants. I was a registered Democrat, but I've changed since then. But I think the Democrats have just gone berserk, all of them. Harris is just too lenient."
Harris is being blamed in this instance due to her pivotal role in shaping California's policy toward transgender prisoners after settling the case of Rodney Quine.
Quine, another inmate serving a life sentence for murder, filed a lawsuit against California's prison system to compel it to pay for a sex-change operation. Harris helped settle the case, leading to California paying for Quine's sex-change surgery and hundreds of thousands of dollars in attorney's fees.
"I worked behind the scenes to not only make sure that that transgender woman got the services she was deserving – so it wasn't only about that case," she said during a 2019 interview with the National Center for Transgender Equality. "I made sure they changed the policy in the state of California so that every transgender inmate in the prison system would have access to the medical care that they desired and need."
"I believe, actually, it may have been one of the first, if not the first, in the country, where I pushed for that policy in a Department of Corrections," Harris continued. "So you can just look at all the work I've done over the years … I feel very strongly about this, and at its core … it's an issue of humanity."
