The Stop the Harm Database, launched by the nonprofit watchdog group Do No Harm on Oct. 8, identified 225 facilities involved in providing sex-change surgeries and prescribing puberty blockers and other hormone therapies to minors. The report was created by matching gender-related transition and procedure codes with insurance claim data to track which healthcare facilities are performing these interventions on minors.
"The database provides conclusive proof that these interventions are happening on children across the country, both hormonal interventions and surgeries," said Beth Serio, a registered nurse who works as an external relations manager at Do No Harm. "We used bulletproof data from insurance claims databases to show that these procedures have been done on children."(Related: MUTILATED TODDLERS: Biden administration pushing for age limits to be dropped from transgender surgery guidelines.)
Do No Harm named 12 hospitals with the highest rates of performing so-called "gender-affirming" procedures on minors. They are led by the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and followed by Connecticut Children's Medical Center, Children's Minnesota, Seattle Children's, Children's Hospital Los Angeles, Boston Children's Hospital, Rady Children's Hospital, Children's National Medical Center, UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland, Children's Hospital Colorado, UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.
CHOP, which offers a range of so-called "gender-affirming" services, reportedly treated 122 transgender patients under 21, including five who underwent surgical procedures and 117 who received hormone treatments and puberty blockers. The hospital has written a total of 768 prescriptions for these treatments, amounting to $230,784 in charges.
The report also revealed that from 2019 to 2023, there were over 14,000 children in the U.S. who underwent some form of gender intervention. Out of these, almost 6,000 children had surgeries and around 8,500 received puberty blockers under the mistaken belief that taking this hormone treatment is reversible. However, Serio debunked these claims.
"It's a common lie in the trans industry in America that these procedures are very highly reversible, that there's no long-term effects," Serio said. "We know that's simply not the case, especially for children who are taking the hormones for a longer period of time. Some of them can have a sterilizing effect on children, especially when taken for a lengthy period of time."
Serio also revealed that the actual number of children affected by these procedures may be even higher, as the analysis only includes data from insurance claims.
"We only included data that we could stand behind 100 percent, based on [Do No Harm's] analysis of insurance claims data," Serio said. "We cannot account for things such as cash or self-pay patients, or a couple of insurance companies who don't report to these databases. As staggering as these numbers are, we're pretty confident that there are even more children that have been impacted by these barbaric treatments."
Furthermore, the financial data from the report shows that families have collectively spent over $199 million on these medical procedures over the past four years.
