Ridiculous Biden-Harris appliance regulations are targeting ACs, dishwashers, furnaces, light bulbs and water heaters
By Zoey Sky // Oct 03, 2024

Regulators working for the administration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are once again trying to meddle with how Americans use home appliances, with potentially negative consequences for consumers in the years to come.

This comes as the White House was forced to reconsider proposed federal restrictions on gas stoves after public outcry in 2023.

Central air conditioners

The Environmental Protection Agency has finalized a rule requiring all new central air conditioners manufactured after Jan. 1, 2025, to use new agency-approved refrigerants considered "sufficiently climate-friendly."

Manufacturers anticipate equipment price increases of 10 percent or higher, even reaching hundreds of dollars. Installation costs could also increase more because the new refrigerants are classified as slightly flammable, which requires additional safety measures.

Homeowners needing a new cooling system should prepare for the inevitable sticker shock once these allegedly eco-friendlier versions become the only available option.

Dishwashers

Dishwashers are often overregulated. And the Department of Energy's (DOE) recent latest dishwasher regulation will only make things worse when it takes effect in 2027. Because of tighter regulations requiring energy and water use limits, modern dishwashers take more than two hours to clean a load of dishes, which is more than twice as long compared to models predating the government red tape.

Cleaning performance and reliability have also suffered due to recent regulations. However, instead of finding ways to undo the damage from existing measures, the DOE is blindly tightening the screws. (Related: Op-ed: Biden administration’s “green energy” schemes AREN’T AS GREEN as they seem.)

Furnaces

A new DOE efficiency regulation will effectively ban new non-condensing gas furnaces by 2028. Owners of older residences use these non-condensing models, and those in need of a new one would often be better off with a straightforward replacement rather than pay for expensive installation challenges from replacing old models with a condensing gas furnace that has different venting requirements.

The DOE admits that these regulations could make installations more difficult, increasing prices by an average of $867. However others warn that this is a lowball estimate due to the changeover from a non-condensing to a condensing unit.

Light bulbs

The standard incandescent light bulb could soon be discontinued due to past DOE efficiency regulations they cannot meet.

However, the more efficient light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs that have emerged as their main replacement are now also the target of a very strict new DOE rule. When the rule is enforced in 2028, it will knock most currently available LEDs off the market and increase the average price of the remaining ones from $2.98 to an estimated $5.68, an increase of $2.70 per bulb.

Light quality may also be impacted by the new DOE rule.

Water heaters

Homeowners considering a new electric water heater might want to purchase one before 2029, which is when another DOE efficiency standard will raise prices by an agency-estimated $953.

Like with the furnace rule, DOE insists that homeowners will earn back the higher up-front cost of these newer water heaters in the form of energy savings.

But in reality, the rule could be a net money-loser for many homeowners, especially if the installation costs are much higher than the agency’s often lower estimates.

Gas stoves could be targeted by regulations next. Even though the two Biden-Harris agencies targeting them, the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the DOE, have paused regulations for now, the agencies could crack down later.

Consumers should also take note of other pending rules that might affect other common appliances such as ceiling fans, refrigerators and washing machines in the future.
