Man who tried to shoot Trump on golf course wrote a book encouraging assassinations of world leaders
By Cassie B. // Sep 23, 2024

The man behind the most recent assassination attempt on Donald Trump, Ryan Routh, penned a 291-page book about Ukraine in which he called on Iran to assassinate the former president.

In the self-published book, entitled Ukraine’s Unwinnable War, he labeled Trump a “buffoon” and a “fool” for actions such as the Capitol incident on January 6, 2021, and exiting the Iran nuclear deal.

Routh noted that as someone who voted for Trump in the past, he shouldered some of the blame for his decisions as president, writing: “I must take part of the blame for the retarded child that we elected for our next president that ended up being brainless, but I am man enough to say that I misjudged and made a terrible mistake and Iran I apologize.”

“You are free to assassinate Trump as well as me for that error in judgment and the dismantling of the deal. No one here in the US seems to have the balls to put natural selection to work or even unnatural selection,” he added.

One chapter of the book, “Why has Putin not been assassinated?”, is devoted to his view on the Russian leader. He questions why Putin hasn’t been assassinated yet and why Russian people “are brainwashed into totally blind sheep.”

“How has the entire world failed to chop of[f] the head of the snake?”, he asks, before conceding that many people think whoever takes his place will simply continue his actions and policies. He also says he’d like to borrow a boat and launch thousands of drones from international waters to Putin’s residences.

He then turns his attention to Belarus, asking why President Alexander Lukashenko has not been assassinated yet. He wrote: “We must do more. We must support all of these Belarusian refugees to stand for their freedom and end the life of Putin’s dog in Belarus."

Routh also mentioned that he had “5900 Afghan soldiers ready to deploy to Ukraine” in a reference to his bizarre efforts to send Afghan soldiers who were escaping from the Taliban to go fight in Eastern Europe. He spent several months trying to recruit soldiers in Ukraine and campaigned in the central square of Kiev, although he did so without support from Ukrainian officials.

Routh facing federal charges for attempted assassination of Trump

Not surprisingly, it’s his anti-Trump rhetoric that is getting the most attention in light of his recent assassination attempt against him. On September 15, Routh managed to get within 500 yards of Trump and set up at a chain link fence on the edge of the fifth and sixth holes of a course at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach where the former president was playing. He was caught with an AK-47 as well as a GoPro camera set up, presumably to record his assassination efforts.

A Secret Service agent saw him and opened fire on him when he tried to place his gun through an opening in the fence. He fled but police later caught up to him on I-95, where he was arrested. It is believed that he sat at his makeshift sniper post for nearly 12 hours in hopes of encountering Trump.

The 58-year-old was charged by federal prosecutors on Monday with multiple firearm violations for the incident, which is being classified as an attempted assassination on the former president. Among the charges are possessing a firearm while having a previous felony conviction and possessing a firearm whose serial number has been removed.

A motive has yet to be revealed, but his extensive writings on social media as well as his self-published books show an obsession with international conflicts and other political topics and a fixation on what he perceived to be Trump's failures as president.
