California Democrats pushing for bill to help ILLEGALS own homes in the state by covering down payments on home purchases
By Ava Grace // Sep 04, 2024

Democrats in deep-blue California are pushing for a measure to help illegal aliens become homeowners in the Golden State.

The measure, Assembly Bill (AB) 1840, would make it clear that a person who applies for a loan under the California Dream for All (DFA) program cannot be disqualified solely because of their immigration status. The DFA program is run by the California Housing Finance Agency (CalHFA), which is under the state-level California Department of Housing and Community Development.

According to ABC News, the DFA program "provides a shared appreciation loan, which typically means that first-time homebuyers do not pay interest. Instead, they only have to pay back the original loan amount, plus 20 percent of any home value appreciation. The loan covers 20 percent of the purchase price or up to $150,000 to cover a down payment or closing costs."

"The loan must be paired with a 30-year fixed interest rate first mortgage from the [CalHFA] and the recipient does not have to make payments on the share appreciation loan until the first mortgage is paid off," the news outlet added.

Aside from this, AB 1840 will allow illegals to apply for the DFA housing loan. However, they must have a valid Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number in addition to meeting existing legal residency and documentation requirements.

Big League Politics pointed out that AB 1840 will likely pass due to Democratic supermajorities enjoyed in both houses of the California State Legislature – 62-17 in the California State Assembly and 31-9 in the California State Senate. True enough, the proposal passed the California State Senate in a 25-14 vote.

Given the high chance of AB 1840 passing the California State Assembly, the only question that remains is whether California Gov. Gavin Newsom signs the bill into law or not. If he vetoes the measure, a two-thirds vote in each chamber of the legislature would be needed to override Newsom – something that could be achieved based on the votes in favor of AB 1840 so far.

California prioritizes ILLEGALS at the expense of bona fide citizens

According to ABC News, AB 1840's language would allow illegals "who pay taxes," such as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy (DACA) recipients, to apply for the loan. Supporters argue that the bill is intended to allow all those who pay taxes in the state to be able to qualify for the assistance.

In contrast, critics argue the money shouldn't be geared toward illegal aliens and individuals who are unlawfully in the U.S. should not be eligible for state programs. Karoline Leavitt, spokeswoman for former President Donald Trump's campaign, described AB 1840 as a "fundamentally unfair but typical Democrat policy."

The introduction of AB 1840 and its potential signing comes amid scrutiny aimed at the Democratic presidential ticket – incumbent Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz – for their open borders policies. According to Big League Politics, this could provide the Trump campaign with plenty of ammunition against its rival.

"California is the poster child of liberal dysfunction and serves as a warning sign for all of the nation about the dangers of uncontrolled immigration," the independent news outlet continued. "According to Pew Research, close to two million illegal aliens are living in California – a likely conservative figure."

"Other states should take note and recognize that they could share a similar fate to California if they don't keep immigration in check."
