In a July 20 interview on the Fox News program "Jesse Watters Primetime," Trump insisted that Biden's doctors should be scrutinized for giving him a "wonderful report." The former president's remark was an answer to Watters, who asked if he would investigate doctors providing Biden with positive health reports despite the opposite.
"Look, you had people that lied to the American public. You ought to take a look at his doctors because his doctors keep giving him this wonderful report. I'm not a doctor, but I saw him the other day, was unable to get up the children's stairs going into Air Force One," Trump answered, referring to Biden’s preference for a shorter staircase to board the plane.
Vance meanwhile called for the invocation of the 25th Amendment, leading Watters to ask if this situation constituted a "coup" against Biden. The Republican presidential and vice-presidential nominee both agreed.
"If Biden can't run for president, he can't serve as president," the Ohio senator said. "And if they want to take him down because he's mentally incapable of serving, invoke the 25th Amendment. You don't get to sort of do this in the most politically beneficial way for Democrats. If it's an actual problem, they should take care of it the appropriate way." The interview was aired a day before Biden announced his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential election on July 21. Republicans quickly interpreted his withdrawal as an admission of unfitness for office, despite claims that Biden gives in amid mounting pressure from within his party.
South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace echoed these sentiments on social media, stating her intent to introduce a resolution urging Vice President Kamala Harris to invoke the 25th Amendment. Mace wrote on July 22 in a post on X: "If Biden does not have the cognitive ability to seek reelection, he does not have the cognitive ability to serve the remainder of his term."
Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville also joined in the fray, writing: "For three and a half years, the corrupt media and the Deep State bureaucracy have lied to the American people. Biden was never mentally fit to be president. I join my colleagues in demanding that [he] resign immediately.
Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert also posted: "If Biden can't run for office, he should resign – immediately." House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana also called on the 81-year-old chief executive to "resign the office immediately" because "Nov. 5 cannot arrive soon enough."
Several other GOP members in the lower chamber of Congress joined the chorus of those demanding that Biden step down. These include Michigan Rep. John James, New York Rep. Elise Stefanik, Wisconsin Rep. Tom Tiffany and Texas Rep. Pat Fallon. Over at the Senate, Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley and Tennessee Sen. Marsha Blackburn also joined in.
