Arizona Rep. Gosar blasts Dem lawmakers who VOTED AGAINST the SAVE Act
By Kevin Hughes // Jul 17, 2024

U.S. Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) slammed his Democratic colleagues in the House of Representatives who voted against the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act.

The House passed the SAVE Act on July 10 in a 221-198 vote. Five Democratic representatives broke ranks with the party, voting alongside Republicans to approve the bill. Introduced by U.S. Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), the SAVE Act requires states to ask for proof of American citizenship before individuals can vote in federal elections.

"I find it both laughable and preposterous that the same people who, for the past four years, forced you to carry a vaccine passport to dine in a restaurant, hold a job or get on a flight are the same people now opposing common-sense legislation requiring individuals to show proof of American citizenship to vote in elections," Gosar, a co-sponsor of the bill, said in a statement.

"Voters are overwhelmingly concerned about the integrity of elections and rightfully so. In fact, most states today continue to allow illegal aliens to receive a driver's license, thus allowing voter registration materials. With 11 million lawbreakers pouring across [President] Joe Biden's open border, this legislation is a crucial step towards ensuring our elections are fair and honest."

The SAVE Act amends the National Voter Registration Act of 1993, needing proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections. The measure also establishes criminal penalties for election officials who fail to implement this requirement and orders the removal of noncitizens from voter rolls.

"We will only be able to keep this republic as a republic as long as our citizenship as Americans remains meaningful. That's why I introduced the SAVE Act in the first place, and it's why the People's House passed it," said Roy, who stressed the importance of the bill.

Democrats falsely claim the SAVE Act is voter suppression

The House's passage of the SAVE Act comes amid a heated debate on election integrity. The Biden administration opposed the bill, arguing that it would complicate voter registration for eligible Americans and possibly lead to the wrongful purging of voters from rolls. U.S. Rep. Jennifer McClellan (D-VA) compared the proposal to historical voter suppression tactics, in particular the Jim Crow poll tax. U.S. Rep. Summer Lee (D-PA) also voiced out her displeasure, stating: "Our fundamental access to our democracy is being politicized."

But House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) accused Democrats of deceiving the public about the SAVE Act's intentions. He remarked: "Democrats have tried to mislead the American people about our efforts to prevent noncitizens from voting. We must protect American elections by passing the SAVE Act."

The congressman for the Pelican State introduced the SAVE Act in May, pushing for its passage before the Independence Day recess. But with its July 10 passage, the bill – which has more than 100 GOP co-sponsors – now encounters the challenge of passing through the Democratic-controlled Senate.

"As expected, the Democrats voted against House Speaker Johnson's election integrity bill and therefore are in favor of 'cheating' in the coming November election," ZeroHedge pointed out. "However, Americans would also be interested to know who the five Democrats who voted for law and order and election integrity were."
