White House claims Biden flub about “beating Medicare” was meant to be about beating Big Pharma
By Laura Harris // Jul 09, 2024

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has clarified that President Joe Biden's puzzling statement about Medicare during the CNN presidential debate was intended to highlight efforts against Big Pharma companies.

During the CNN presidential debate on June 27, the 81-year-old Biden grappled with a hoarse voice and stumbled over words and moments. The president repeatedly froze up and lost his train of thought during the debate, and when he was asked a question about the national debt, he ended his meandering answer by declaring that his administration had "finally beat Medicare." The answer then turned out to be among one of the president's biggest issues in the debate.

The White House later tried to explain the situation, with Jean-Pierre attempting to clarify that Biden was not actually referring to the popular program that provides health insurance for older Americans. (Related: Biden’s campaign claims his TERRIBLE performance during debate with Trump was a result of "overpreparation.")

"He meant to say he beat Big Pharma," Jean-Pierre said in a briefing when asked about the answer. "I mean, that's what he meant to say."

Moreover, Jean-Pierre claimed that the statement was meant to convey the administration's accomplishment in enabling Medicare to negotiate lower prescription drug prices with pharmaceutical companies to reduce federal spending.

Jean-Pierre insists Biden is still "as sharp as ever"

Philip Wegmann of Real Clear Politics, who asked Jean-Pierre about the president's Medicare statement, followed up and asked the press secretary about Biden's mental fitness.

"You have more interaction with the president than most folks. You know him better than most anyone else. Can you say – Do you believe that the president is as sharp today as he was when he took this job? Have you seen any slow-downs?" Wegman asked.

"What I can say is this is a president who is strong and resolute in delivering for the American people. That's what I see," Jean-Pierre answered. "I see a president, when I'm in sitting in front of him, you know, going through the day or talking about what he's doing next, he is someone that engages with us. He wants to know, he pushes us, he prods us, wanting to figure out the bigger picture of whatever we're trying to explain to him or even granule details."

"So he's as sharp as ever?" the reporter pressed.

"He is as sharp as ever, as I have known him to be in my engagement and my experience with him," Jean-Pierre insisted. "And I know when I walk into the Oval Office or we're seeing him on Air Force One, I have to be on top of my game. I do. I mean, and that's just kind of my engagement with him and how it's been for the past couple of years."

All this, despite acknowledging Biden's lapses during the debate and despite the public witnessing his disastrous performance that day.
