DEI-hire Secret Service agent assigned to VP Harris ASSAULTS superior while on duty
By Ramon Tomey // Apr 29, 2024

A Secret Service member hired as part of a diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiative reportedly assaulted his superior officer while on duty.

According to the National Pulse, the agent assigned to the security detail of Vice President Kamala Harris was involved in an altercation with another agent on April 22. The incident occurred at Andrews Air Force Base (AFB) in Maryland, shortly before the second-highest U.S. official arrived. As per preliminary reports, the incident involved two unarmed agents – but later reports painted a very different picture.

The said agent, described to have displayed erratic behavior on prior occasions, began arguing with colleagues. A supervisor and the special agent in charge (SAIC) of the detail intervened, but the aggressor fought back, sparking an altercation. Other Secret Service agents restrained the aggressor with handcuffs, and medical staff were called in.

Initial reports also claimed that the agents involved were unarmed, but later reports disproved this as the aggressor had a sidearm – albeit holstered. The agent that ran amok was later disarmed after being restrained by colleagues.

RealClearPolitics correspondent Susan Crabtree also shared other details about the incident on the X platform. "Sources say the agent in question was [acting] erratically upon showing up for a traveling shift at [Andrews AFB]," she wrote on April 24.

"The agent ended up tackling the SAIC of the VP's detail, got on top of him and started punching him. At this point … the agent who was attacking the SAIC did indeed have a gun, but it was in the holster. Other agents are expressing relief that the agent did not shoot the SAIC."

Crabtree: DEI concerns surround erring Secret Service agent

Anthony Guglielmi, chief of communications for the Secret Service, confirmed the incident in a statement.

"At approximately 9 a.m. on April 22, a U.S. Secret Service agent supporting the vice president's departure from [Andrews AFB] began displaying behavior their colleagues found distressing. The agent was removed from their assignment while medical personnel were summoned," the statement said.

"The vice president was at the Naval Observatory when this incident occurred, and there was no impact on her departure from [Andrews AFB]. The U.S. Secret Service takes the safety and health of our employees very seriously. As this was a medical matter, we will not disclose any further details." The Washington Examiner also expounded on the risks that come with the job, in light of the incident: "All Secret Service agents are armed while on domestic protective duty. But as with their Diplomatic Security Service counterparts, agents assigned to protective details endure heavy travel burdens, often working long hours away from home. The psychological health of armed agents serving in very close proximity to high-ranking government officials and foreign heads of state is thus a high-priority concern for the Secret Service."

"Moreover, the Vice Presidential Protective Division (VPPD) is widely regarded within the Secret Service as the second most prestigious assignment after the Presidential Protective Division. Because of the continuity of government protocols, VPD agents are party to exceptionally sensitive planning on responses to nuclear war and catastrophic terrorist attacks or environmental disasters."

According to the Examiner, VPPD agents "must serve in field offices for a minimum of three years and receive excellent performance reports" before being accepted. "They must also then pass the intensive Protective Detail Training course at the Secret Service's James J. Rowley training facility in the D.C. suburbs."

"I'm also told there are DEI concerns among the [Secret Service] community about the hiring of this agent," Crabtree noted. "Other agents and officers within the [Secret Service] are asking questions about the agent's hiring process [and] whether the [agency] did enough to look into the agent's background and monitor the agent's mental well-being because there have been enough widespread concerns about other strange behavior before the incident."
