BETRAYAL: Senate approves $95.3 billion aid package for Israel and Ukraine with nothing for U.S. border security
By Laura Harris // Feb 19, 2024

The Senate has approved a $95.3 billion foreign aid bill for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, but nothing for the U.S. border security crisis after Republicans rejected the bipartisan border security deal.

Earlier in February, Senate Republicans voted against advancing the bipartisan border security deal that seeks to impose stricter immigration and asylum laws while providing foreign aid to those three countries. The bill, part of a $118 billion national security supplemental package, includes $60 billion for Ukraine; $14 billion in security assistance for Israel and $10 billion in humanitarian aid for civilians in Gaza, the West Bank and Ukraine.

The bill also aims to invest $20.2 billion in improving border security, providing $6.8 billion to U.S. Customs and Border Protection; $7.6 billion to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement; and $4 billion to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

However, Senate Republicans stood firm in their opposition on Feb. 7, rejecting the deal in a 49-50 vote. A total of 60 votes were required for the legislation to proceed.

But the Senate approved the $95.3 billion foreign aid bill designated for various purposes, including support for Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia, security assistance for Israel and humanitarian aid for civilians in Gaza, the West Bank and Ukraine.

According to the Senate Appropriations Committee, the legislation includes $60 billion to support Ukraine against Russia, $14.1 billion in security assistance for Israel, $9.2 billion for humanitarian aid and $4.8 billion to support regional partners in the Indo-Pacific region.

The Senate vote, with a tally of 70 to 29, saw 22 Republicans voting in favor, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Senate Republican Whip John Thune and Senators John Boozman, Shelley Moore Capito, Bill Cassidy, Susan Collins, John Cornyn, Kevin Cramer, Mike Crapo, Joni Ernst, Chuck Grassley, John Hoeven, John Kennedy, Jerry Moran, Lisa Murkowski, Jim Risch, Mike Rounds, Dan Sullivan, Thom Tillis, Roger Wicker, Todd Young and Mitt Romney.

Republican opposition to foreign aid bill ignites major clash between two chambers

House Speaker Mike Johnson criticized the legislation and refused to bring it to the floor.

"Right now, we're dealing with the appropriations process, we have immediate deadlines upon us and that’s where the attention is in the House in this moment," he said.

This, in turn, has ignited a major clash between the two chambers.

In response to Johnson, President Joe Biden urged House Republicans to hold a vote on the bill. (Related: Outrage: Biden holds America HOSTAGE while demanding ransom in form of BILLIONS more in “aid” for Ukraine, Israel.)

During remarks from the White House, Biden stressed that a "minority of the most extreme voices in the House" should not be allowed to block the critical legislation. Biden also warned that failure to act could result in increased aggression from Russian President Vladimir Putin beyond Ukraine, with escalated costs for America and its allies.

Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump sided with Johnson. He opposed the current legislation and said that the U.S. should only provide foreign aid as a loan. He has also suggested that he would support Russian aggression against NATO member countries that don't contribute enough financially.
