Calls grow to deport migrants who attacked two police officers in New York City
By Ava Grace // Feb 08, 2024

For New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, the migrants recently caught on camera assaulting two police officers in Times Square should be deported.

"Get them all and send them back," she said in response to a question about the people who have been arrested in connection with the assaults. "You don't touch our police officers. You don't touch anybody. I think that's actually something that should be looked at, I mean, if someone commits a crime against a police officer in the state of New York and they're not here legally. Definitely worth checking into." (Related: NYC Mayor Eric Adams DEFUNDS POLICE, rolls out various austerity measures to spend on ILLEGAL MIGRANTS.)

Four migrant men charged with felonies in an attack on two New York City Police Department (NYPD) officers outside a migrant shelter are now on their way to a California town near Mexico after they were released from custody and given bus tickets by a faith-based charity, a senior law enforcement official said.

They were among at least seven people arrested in the incident. They were staying in a New York City shelter and used false names with the charity.

Investigators said even though the defendants could be going to Mexico by way of Calexico, California, "we have no legal authority to chase them or attempt to stop them" because the Manhattan district attorney did not request bail and the defendants were released on their own recognizance.

"We have to assume they intend to return to court, which, given the circumstances around their departure, seems unlikely," the source added.

New Yorkers calling for removal of violent migrants from the city

Responding to a question on whether the city will contact Immigration and Customs Enforcement to remove the migrants suspected of assaulting NYPD officers given the city's sanctuary city status, NYPD Deputy Commissioner for Intelligence Rebecca Weiner said keeping them in jail – which they currently aren't – "is a good solution to the problem."

The case follows a surge in migrants arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border and, as a knock-on effect, in far-off major U.S. cities – where many have gone on their own or on buses hired by Texas. Some 67,000 migrants are under New York City's care, among more than 173,900 who've arrived in the city since spring 2022, said a City Hall spokesperson.

More than 6.3 million migrants are recorded to have crossed into the U.S. illegally since 2021, record highs that could affect the re-election chances of President Joe Biden.

Nicole Malliotakis, a Republican congresswoman who represents Staten Island, said: "It is absolutely disgusting that people who are in this country, that are being housed by the taxpayers, would turn around and disrespect our laws and our law enforcement."

Republicans in New York are calling for the governor to send National Guard troops to the U.S. borders with Canada and Mexico to help stem the flow of migrants.

"The overwhelming number of immigrants, migrants, asylum-seekers, they want to be here and do what's right. Those violent ones, we need to immediately have them removed from our city," said New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

"Violence against police officers is never acceptable," said a spokesperson for Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. "Every defendant charged so far is facing felony charges that carry a penalty of up to seven years."

Police, meanwhile, are trying to identify four more men who allegedly participated in the assault outside the migrant shelter, the law enforcement source said.
