Hunter Biden DEFIES House Oversight Committee subpoena
By Ramon Tomey // Dec 18, 2023

Presidential son Hunter Biden has publicly announced that he won't testify in private before the House Oversight Committee (HOC), defying a subpoena the committee sent to him.

The younger Biden made this announcement during a Dec. 13 press briefing outside the U.S. Capitol building. He reiterated that he would only participate in a public congressional hearing instead of a private deposition. HOC Chairman Rep. James Comer (R-KY) has rejected Hunter's plea to testify publicly.

"They have no shame," Hunter said, referring to the HOC. "These same committee chairmen have engaged in unprecedented political interference in what would have already been a five-year investigation of me."

The presidential son then took a swipe at Comer, saying: "Yet here I am, Mr. Chairman, taking up your offer when you said we can bring these people in for depositions or committee hearings, whichever they choose. Well, I've chosen … to testify at a public hearing today to answer any of the [HOC's] legitimate questions."

"Republicans do not want an open process where Americans can see their tactics, expose their baseless inquiry, or hear what I have to say. What are they afraid of? I'm here. I'm ready."

The younger Biden also acknowledged his "mistakes," "privileges" and "wasted opportunities" – noting that he was "responsible" and "accountable" for those. To that end, he reiterated that he is "making amends" before lashing out at Make America Great Again (MAGA) Republicans.

"I'm also here today to correct how the MAGA Right has betrayed me for their political purposes. I am first and foremost a son; a father; a brother; and a husband from a loving and supportive family. I'm proud to have earned degrees from Georgetown University and Yale Law School. I'm proud of my legal career and my business career. I'm proud of my time serving on a dozen different boards of directors, and I'm proud of my efforts to forge global business relationships."

Comer: Hunter could be held in CONTEMPT

Hunter lamented how MAGA Republicans "have impugned [his] character; invaded [his] privacy; attacked [his] wife, children, family and friends; ridiculed [his] struggle with addiction; belittled his recovery; [and] tried to dehumanize him" for the past six years. All of this, he continued, was to "embarrass and damage" President Joe Biden – his father.

"Let me state as clearly as I can. My father was not financially involved in my business. Not as a practicing lawyer, not as a board member of Burisma, not in my partnership with a Chinese private businessman, not in my investments at home nor abroad, and certainly not as an artist." (Related: Hunter Biden implicated in a 'laundry list' of corrupt overseas business practices as father Joe Biden intimately involved.)

However, Comer himself warned that the presidential son's refusal to comply with the subpoena could land him in even bigger trouble. According to a report by POLITICO, Hunter could be held in contempt if he defies the summons.

"He's been subpoenaed; we expect him to show up. They don't get to make the rules," said Comer. "I would expect Congress to hold the president's son in contempt" if he does not show up, he added.

On the same day as the younger Biden's press conference, his legal counsel Abbe Lowell sent a letter to Comer insisting that Hunter would testify publicly. The defense attorney argued that a closed-door testimony would run the risk of details getting selectively leaked.

"[Hunter] is making this choice because the [HOC] has demonstrated time and again it uses closed-door sessions to manipulate, even distort, the facts and misinform the American people," Lowell wrote. "A [public] hearing would ensure transparency and truth in these proceedings."
