Independent journalist Auden Cabello shared aerial footage of the illegal entry on X (formerly Twitter), which happened in the area between the cities of Piedras Negras in Mexico and Eagle Pass in Texas.
"I keep hearing politicians on [the] right saying 'build the wall,'" Cabello wrote. "Eagle Pass should serve as a reminder that walls and barriers are not the most effective."
According to the independent journalist, Eagle Pass has a floating barrier in the middle of the river; a barrier of concertina wire; a barrier made of shipping containers; and two sections of border wall erected under the administrations of incumbent Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and former President George W. Bush. Aside from these physical barriers, the area also has cameras and both federal and state forces.
"None of [these] deters migrants from arriving to Piedras Negras and crossing into Eagle Pass," Cabello pointed out. The most effective ways to stem the influx of illegal immigration into the U.S., he explained, are by changing policies at the state and federal levels, and by enforcing laws already on the books.
Moreover, the citizen journalist pointed out that Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy has called for additional floating barriers in the Rio Grande. The floating barriers were first erected in June by Abbott. (Related: Texas to place FLOATING BARRIERS along Rio Grande River to block border crossers.)
"What we're doing right now [is that] we're securing the border at the border. What these buoys will allow us to do is to prevent people from even getting to the border," said the governor of the Lone Star State during a June 8 press conference. "One of the goals is to slow down and deter as many [illegal immigrants] as possible."
On Nov. 5, Ramaswamy posted on X that the border crisis "is a masochistic crisis of [America's] own making." He pointed out that the issue is "solvable," outlining six ways to do so.
He called for more barriers to be erected, specifically the expansion of the aquatic river barrier and the resumption of border wall construction. He also called for the restoration and expansion of the "Remain in Mexico" policy, which would now include family units and unaccompanied minors. Ramaswamy also demanded that Mexico accept all returnees under threat of financial consequences.
The GOP candidate also called for the end of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation, which according to him is abused as a form of "amnesty" against deportation. Incumbent U.S. President Joe Biden granted TPS to Venezuelan migrants.
Ramaswamy ultimately called for the closure of the Darien Gap, where most migrants from all corners of the world congregate before unlawfully entering American soil. The gap can be closed through sanctions or tariffs against Colombia, Panama and Costa Rica – three nations that have controlled the flow of migrants for years. Lastly, he called for the militarization of the southern border "to be clear about [America's] seriousness and resolve."
