Hackensack Meridian Health announced the return of mask mandates in several of its facilities in the Garden State. "This decision was made due to an increase in COVID-19 prevalence in these hospitals, facilities, and communities," the hospital network said in a statement. "The health and safety of our team members and patients has always been and continues to be our No. 1 priority."
Other hospitals in New Jersey have followed suit, according to the Epoch Times. Shore Medical Center in Somers Point and Cape Regional Medical Center in Cape May, have also reinstated mask mandates for healthcare workers
Over at the West Coast, Marin County in California's Bay Area also announced the return of mask mandates for healthcare workers in hospitals and other healthcare facilities. The mandates will take effect on Nov. 2 and will last until March 31, 2024. County health officials cited the historical seasonal rise in respiratory viruses during late fall as a reason for this decision.
Other Bay Area counties such as Contra Costa, Sonoma, Alameda and San Mateo have also issued mask orders for healthcare staff in high-risk facilities. They cited increases in COVID-19, influenza, and other respiratory viruses for the return of mask mandates. These orders will take effect on Nov. 1 and will last until April 30, 2024.
However, data from both the New Jersey Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that hospitalizations caused by COVID-19 remain low across the Garden State. Based on the public health agency's data, a 4.3 percent drop in COVID-19 hospitalizations was recorded during the week ending Sept. 16. (Related: CDC data shows COVID hospital admission rates remain low in 97% of U.S. hospitals, but MASK MANDATES are making a comeback anyway.)

Although hospitalizations have been on the rise since July, the recent numbers remain relatively low compared to previous seasonal surges of COVID-19. Emergency department visits were down 19.3 percent and test positivity decreased by 1.6 percent during the same week.
Despite the low number of hospitalizations, medical facilities have been bringing back mask mandates since August. Some have required employees to mask up, while others have extended it to patients and visitors.
Hospitals aren't only the ones that reinstated mask mandates – as some schools and private businesses did so likewise. According to The Hill, these entities brought back face masks due to an uptick in COVID-19 infections in their vicinity.
In one instance, Rosemary Hills Elementary School in Maryland's Montgomery County required students to wear masks once more in September due to the latest "variants" of COVID-19. Morris Brown College in Atlanta also reinstated masks as a two-week precautionary measure, reflecting a growing concern about rising infection rates among students and staff.
Film studio Lionsgate – which is based in Santa Monica, California – initially implemented a mask mandate for its facilities after several staff members tested positive for COVID-19. But this mandate was eventually lifted after advice from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. The county health authority suggested that the mask mandate could be revoked "following days of no new infections."
