Heavy rains have been sweeping through much of South Texas and northern Mexico for the past few weeks now, swelling the Rio Grande River along the border and endangering the lives of the thousands of Central and South American people attempting to cross the border after the expiration of asylum restrictions known as Title 42. The most recent chaotic scenes that occurred were caught on camera, showing groups of migrant attempting to barge through the metal gates of one of the Gateway International Bridges on Monday, June 5.
In one video, dozens of illegals were seen running through the pedestrian side of the bridge as a Mexican border agent extended his hands out to try to stop people from moving. This border agent was knocked to the ground and the group of migrants continued trying to force their way across the bridge and into Brownsville, Texas.
These immigrants, mostly from Venezuela, El Salvador and Honduras, were able to reach the end of the bridge where they encountered American Border Patrol agents.
The attempt by illegals to force their way through the bridge without the proper documentation to enter the U.S. prompted the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to shut down the bridge for the second time within a week.
In a statement, the CBP stated that its Office of Field Operations temporarily ceased operations on the bridge for around three hours as border agents attempted to bring order back to the border crossing.
"We made this decision informed by operational considerations, including information regarding groups congregating in the immediate vicinity of the bridge," the CBP said.
The CBP once again shut down the bridge on Tuesday, June 6, , forcing wait times for vehicles with the proper documentation to cross to surge by up to two hours. The situation remained precarious throughout the week, and officers from the Brownsville Police Department were called in by the CBP for backup.
"If we see that they're being overtaken, then we're going to do whatever we can to help them push people back," said Brownsville police spokesperson Martin Sandoval. "But we're not going to do anything until we receive the world from border patrol, this is their scene."
Sandoval added that the CBP only asked the Brownsville police to aid them at the Gateway International Bridge.
The CBP noted that many large groups keep trying to cross without having the proper paperwork to enter the country. Many are also not making appointments to meet with CBP officials through the CBP One app, which could grant lawful entry into the United States.
