Dr. Leana Wen questioned the ongoing medical martial law in a rare moment of clarity, tweeting: "For those who don't agree that the vaccinated can return to pre-pandemic normal, I ask: What should we all do? Perpetual masking? Forever not dining out, avoiding large wedding and indoor gatherings? Virtually everything has risk, and zero-COVID is not a viable strategy."
However, the physician's post did not sit well with her Twitter followers, who appear to favor implementing medical martial law permanently.
A reply from internal medicine specialist Dr. Denise Dewald received more than 6,000 likes. She challenged Wen in her reply: "How about this? Continue to mask until we have adequate ventilation and filtration of indoor air, effective treatments for acute and long COVID and … access to said treatments and mitigations [for everyone?]" Dewald added that unless these three requirements are fulfilled, people should continue wearing N95 masks.
Another user said wanting to return to the pre-pandemic normal is akin to alcoholism and dubbed limits on indoor gatherings and mask-wearing orders as "rehab" for the addiction. The user tweeted: "Accepting sobriety is tough. We will never return to the carefree abandon of 2019 [because that] is a narcissistic fantasy. When you learn that an old behavior now harms yourself and others – and may even cause disability and death – it means you have to completely change your life forever."
Pro-vaccination organization Protect Their Future (PTF) also joined in the conversation, suggesting that every person "continue to mask until everyone has access to [COVID-19] vaccines … and we can find a way to protect immunocompromised people." A fourth user agreed with PTF on the issue of mask mandates, arguing that "at the very least, preschools should still have masks."(Related: CCP plant "Wuhan Wen" now agrees with "anti-science" Americans and admits that Covid masks and lockdowns RUIN children's cognitive and motor development.)
Formerly the health commissioner for the city of Baltimore, Wen has appeared in several mainstream media outlets, frequently serving as a commentator on a network previously denounced for peddling fake news.
Her sudden about-face on the issue of COVID-19 restrictions elicits questions about whether she saw the error of her previous ways, or she was simply following the narrative of "living with COVID" espoused by the Democratic establishment as the midterm elections are nearing. Interestingly, Wen had previously called for draconian measures against those turning down the COVID-19 vaccine.
Back in July 2021, she called for nationwide mask mandates on both the unvaccinated and the vaccinated alike. The pro-lockdown physician justified her call for mask mandates as stemming from the unreliability of the honor system.
"Here's the major reason we need to go back to indoor mask mandates in grocery stores and schools. Without a reliable system to determine proof of vaccination, it's not possible to tell who is vaccinated and who is not. The honor system does not work," she tweeted.
Months later, Wen advocated for depriving the unvaccinated of their right to travel – an infringement of the Comity Clause in the Constitution. According to the pro-lockdown physician, interstate travel is but a privilege tied to one's vaccination status.
"There are privileges associated with being an American. If you wish to have these privileges, you need to get vaccinated. Having the right to travel interstate [is] not a constitutional right as far as I know," she said in September 2021. "If you want to stay unvaccinated, that's your choice. But if you want to travel, you better go get that vaccine."
