This decision is a complete turnaround for the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunization (JCVI), U.K.'s independent vaccine advisory committee, which previously refused to recommend children to get the jab over justified fears of myocarditis linked to the Pfizer vaccines.
Health Secretary Sajid Javid said the choice will be up to the parents if they want to take up the offer to help increase their children's protection against future waves of COVID-19 as the country learns to live with the virus
For this age group, the children will be offered two 10-microgram doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, with a 12-week interval between doses.
JCVI earlier admitted that the virus does not pose a threat to most children. (Related: Dr. Robert Malone: COVID vaccines are permanently damaging children.)
With over 1.2 million adverse reactions, including 2,000 deaths reported to the Yellow Card Scheme as of February 2, questions have been raised on how the JCVI suddenly came to the conclusion that vaccination benefits outweigh the risks. The Yellow Card Scheme is the system for recording adverse incidents with medicines and medical devices in the United Kingdom.
Some side effects of the Pfizer vaccine for kids include pain at the vaccination site, fatigue, headache, chills, muscle pain, fever, joint pain, swollen lymph nodes, nausea and decreased appetites.
There are also plenty of adverse effects such as myocarditis, cardiac arrests, anaphylaxis and immunodeficiency. Of the many adverse effects recorded, one of the most concerning is the multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children. This is a condition where different body parts become severely inflamed, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes or gastrointestinal organs. Little is known about it, including its cause and risk factors.
Wei Shen Lim from the JCVI said they're offering the vaccine to five to 11-year-olds to future-proof their defenses against a future wave of infection, and he suggested that parents consider their children getting the vaccine during the school holidays to minimize disruption to their education.
Because COVID-19 vaccine clinical trials only started in the summer of 2020, long-term effects have not been established, and pharmaceutical companies are betting on vaccines rarely causing long-term effects.
The U.S. has already given the vaccine to eight million children in the same age group, and it has been used widely in other countries despite the listed risks. Children aged five to 11 who have other medical conditions that could put them at a greater risk for COVID are also already eligible for the vaccine. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is slated to outline his government's long-term strategy for "living with COVID" on February 21. While the country has already scrapped most of its restrictive measures, such as mandatory face masks and vaccine passports, it will have to discuss further the other measures, including legal requirements for infected individuals to isolate. These measures are expected to be lifted within weeks.
