New Jersey Rep. Chris Smith accused President Joe Biden of being complicit with China's human rights abuses by agreeing to participate in the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

Smith, a staunch pro-life Catholic who chaired dozens of congressional hearings on human rights abuses in China, said it is "unconscionable" that the U.S. participated in quadrennial event while "a genocide is occurring simultaneously" in the host country.

The Biden administration implemented a largely symbolic "diplomatic boycott" against the Winter Olympics this year, which kicked off in Beijing on February 4. However, American athletes were free to participate in the games if they wanted to.

Smith compared the Winter Olympics to the 1936 Berlin Games, which was held in Germany just before World War II broke out. "Instead of the Nazis, it is the Chinese Communist Party [CCP]," he said.

The Republican lawmaker said that in 2014, when China was given the opportunity to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, Chinese President Xi Jinping was already "planning the genocide against the Uyghurs," a Muslim minority group that had been subject to abuse, torture and genocide at the hands of the Chinese government.

"We have documents that clearly show Xi Jinping saying, 'Show no mercy, destroy them.' And he's committing classical genocide. It meets the definition of the UN Convention on Genocide, including forced abortion to get rid of children," Smith said.

The Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, which was approved by the General Assembly on December 9, 1948, and enforced on January 12, 1951, confirmed that "genocide, whether committed in times of peace or in times of war, is a crime under international law which they undertake to prevent and to punish."

Genocide may include killing members of the group, causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group, deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life, imposing measures intended to prevent births and forcibly transferring children of the group to another.

Further, Smith also pointed out that the brutality of the Chinese government extends not only to the Uyghur Muslims but to Hong Kongers and other faiths as well, including Christianity.

The congressman, who branded the Winter Olympics as "chaotic," also mentioned the Dutch reporter who was dragged away by Chinese police last week during a live broadcast. He also blasted the Chinese government for their "terrible charade" of having an Uyghur Muslim skier take on the role as the Olympic torchbearer to convince the world that they are not being oppressed by the CCP.

The congressman also said that the president is complicit with China in more ways than permitting the athletes to compete. "This Olympics is the Genocide Olympics," Smith said. "President Biden, unfortunately, has enabled the Chinese Communist Party for a long time."

He mentioned that while serving as chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee in 2011, Biden failed to denounce China's one-child policy. Biden drew backlash from Republicans and pro-lifers at the time when he said that he was not second-guessing the brutal policy that coerced women into killing unborn children. Smith also pointed out that Biden and his son, Hunter Biden, are "making significant money through China." This accusation was backed by investigative journalist Peter Schweizer, who said that the Bidens have made "five deals in China totaling some $31 million arranged by individuals with direct ties to Chinese intelligence – some reaching the very top of China's spy agency."

Additionally, the U.S. government told American athletes not to criticize the Chinese government.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi recently drew criticisms when she told American Olympians to refrain from talking about the torture, brutality and genocide of the Chinese government to avoid incurring its anger.

Pelosi reminded the athletes that they are going to China to compete. "Do not risk incurring the anger of the Chinese government, because they are ruthless. I know there is a temptation on the part of some to speak out while they are there, I respect that. But I also worry about what the Chinese government might do to their reputations, to their families," she said. (Related: Cotton: Nike's message on genocide in China is 'Just Do It.')

Contrary to Pelosi's advice, Smith believes that American athletes should be brave enough to speak out against China, saying that the worst the CCP can do will be to deport the athletes.
