This is according to Ian Gentles, a professor of history and global affairs at Tyndale University in Toronto. He wrote an opinion piece on The Epoch Times that laid out just how disastrous Canada's pandemic response has been.
According to Gentles, due to the COVID-19 lockdowns, the rate of domestic abuse and alcohol and drug consumption in Canada has gone up. Many restaurants and other small businesses have been driven to bankruptcy, resulting in the loss of thousands of jobs. The average income of Canadians has also plummeted, and government debt soared to an all-time high to nearly CA$2 trillion ($1.599 trillion).
"Worst of all, our children have paid a heavy price by the on-and-off shutting down of schools," wrote Gentles. "Not only has their education been curtailed; their normal socialization with other children has been severely reduced. We know that online learning is no substitute for attending in person in the company of one's peers. We have no idea how much our children will suffer in later years from the prolonged denial of their normal freedoms, but many think the consequences will be dire."
Parents are also suffering from the closure of schools, as many families are being forced to choose between paying through the nose for daycare or a family member giving up their job to look after the children during the day.
The Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec are among the worst perpetrators of authoritarian COVID-19 lockdowns in the country.
Both provinces have shut down their schools and imposed sweeping bans on visiting restaurants, bars and gyms. (Related: Canada set to announce COVID-19 vaccine MANDATES as Western government becomes more authoritarian.)
In Quebec, the entire province of eight million has imposed a curfew on all of its residents. Anyone found outside of their homes after 10 p.m. for any reason can be fined between CA$1,000 to CA$6,000 ($800 to $4,800).
Despite the clear evidence proving that the lockdowns are harmful and ineffective at dealing with COVID-19, a recent poll found that a slim majority of Canadians are still supportive of these heavy-handed government regulations.
According to a poll conducted by polling and market research company Leger, in collaboration with the Association of Canadian Studies, 56 percent of Canadians agree that the federal government and their respective provincial or territorial governments are making the right decisions to limit the spread of the coronavirus and keep the country's public health system from collapsing.
Thirty-one percent of respondents said they do not believe the coronavirus poses a serious health risk to people, even to those who are infected, and that the government should stop trying to meddle in economic affairs by restricting economic activity. The remaining 14 percent do not know.
Government and public health officials in Canada have repeatedly told Canadians that lockdowns and economic restrictions are necessary to prevent a catastrophe. This poll shows many Canadians believe them, but it also suggests that more people are becoming unhappy with how politicians are handling the pandemic.
According to Christian Bourque, executive vice president of Leger, the poll shows that more and more Canadians are feeling fatigued by the lockdowns. Many want the government to focus its efforts on teaching Canadians how to "just live with" the coronavirus.
