The wave of engineered rioting in Seattle is ongoing. Late on Sunday, August 16, rioters threw explosives and other projectiles at Seattle Police Department (SPD) officers, injuring at least six. Eighteen rioters were arrested during that night's clashes between the violent mob and the police.
The rioters were taking part in a demonstration against the Seattle Police Officers Guild, the main union that represents rank-and-file members of the SPD. According to SPD reports, officers were assaulted with projectiles such as rocks, bottles and fireworks, and at several points during the evening, explosives were thrown.
Many of the recent riots are most likely a response to the fact that the Seattle City Council recently passed a measure that defunded the SPD, and that police chief Carmen Best announced her resignation right after in protest. These actions will no doubt further demoralize the city's law enforcement, and make the rioters they have been working hard to fight against even more aggressive.
“It really is about the overarching lack of respect for the officers, the men and women who work so hard, day in and day out,” said Best after she announced her resignation. “The idea that we've worked so incredibly hard to make sure our department was diverse, that it reflects the community that we serve, to just turn that all on a dime and hack it off, without having a plan in place to move forward, is highly distressful for me.”

Seattle rioters injured at least three police officers, and three other individuals
According to SPD reports, a group initially made up of around 100 people began marching at around 7 p.m., beginning at the International District in the center of the city. This group started making their way south to the SoDo neighborhood, where the Seattle Police Officers Guild building is located.
For around three hours, SPD officers had to endure an unending torrent of projectiles being thrown at them – mostly rocks, bottles and fireworks – until one of the rioters set off an explosive device that injured at least six people, including three police officers.
One officer suffered a burn to the neck. Another received a very serious eye injury, which got that officer hospitalized overnight in Harborview Medical Center in the downtown area.

The explosion, along with the many criminal acts perpetrated by the violent mob during the rally, forced the SPD to declare the gathering a riot. The declaration legally allows them to use crowd control munitions to aid them in dispersing the crowd, such as pepper spray and blast balls – grenade-like objects that, upon exploding, generate a loud noise and bright light and release either pepper spray gas or tear gas. Several rioters were arrested during this initial dispersal.
The mob was forced to move north, back towards the International District where they first gathered. Upon arriving in this area, several more rioters were arrested. By 11:30 p.m., the rioters had been thoroughly cleared out. A total of 18 people were arrested and booked into the nearby King County Jail. Four of the cases have already been sent up to the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office (KCPAO) for review.
In response to the violence on Sunday, Casey NcNerthney, spokeswoman for the KCPAO, said in an email:
“We cannot overemphasize the important distinction between people who are gathered to nonviolently air grievances against their government and those who take advantage of the otherwise peaceful protest to commit acts of violence, victimize peaceful protesters or commit acts of arson, property destruction and theft. Each of the cases we file are public, and we believe that when people in the community read those public documents they'll see the distinction, too.”
Seattle rioters heavily organized
Sunday night's riot was organized by the Youth Liberation Front Seattle Division (Seattle YLF), a group that is affiliated with Antifa's network of nationwide radical leftist organizations. They describe themselves as a student and youth-led antifascist and anti-capitalist organization. “This Sunday we march against the [Seattle Police Officers Guild], this ‘union’ protects killer cops from accountability,” wrote the group on their social media in the days leading up to the riot. They continually attack the police union for its efforts in leading the fight against defunding the SPD.
