The far Left in America are cheering the primary victory of socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who defeated a 10-term Leftist Democrat in New York, Rep. Joe Crowley, and are now claiming that this 28-year-old political novice is the new face of her party.
Without a doubt, the Democratic Party has lurched to the Left — even further Left than it had lurched during the Obama years. While the former president was a closet Marxist who wanted to “fundamentally transform” our country, he still had to retain some semblance of moderation in order to ensure it continued to function.
It did, but barely. As Obama began his first term, the country was plunging headlong into the Great Recession; the unemployment rate would soon reach double-digits, home foreclosures would soar, personal savings accounts would be drained, and trillions of dollars in wealth vanished from the stock market.
But because of Obama’s big-government, heavy regulations approach to government, our economic recovery took the longest (making it the worst) on record.
Ocasio-Cortez’s economic policies, should she ever be in a position to implement them, would turn the United States into one massive Venezuela, where inflation is something like 14,000 percent and hard currency is so scarce anyone who has it gets a discount when they purchase goods — that is, if they can find anything to buy.
Some establishment Democrats are beginning to see the writing on the wall. While they may have backed Obama’s brand of Left-wing politics, they’re not comfortable with full-on Marxism which is what Ocasio-Cortez and her supporters are pushing for (no borders, no profits, free this, free that).
Writing in The Wall Street Journal, former Democrat-turned-Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut called on New York Democrats in Crowley’s district to shun Ocasio-Cortez in November and return him to Congress. (Related: Establishment Dems REJECT Left-wing darling Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s attempt to TAKE OVER party: ‘It AIN’T happening, OK?’)
Ocasio-Cortez’s “surprise victory” over Crowley “seems likely to hurt Congress, America, and the Democratic Party. It doesn’t have to,” Lieberman began.
He notes further:
Because the policies Ms. Ocasio-Cortez advocates are so far from the mainstream, her election in November would make it harder for Congress to stop fighting and start fixing problems. Thanks to a small percentage of primary votes, all of the people of New York’s 14th Congressional District stand to lose a very effective representative in Washington.
Crowley, Lieberman continued, will still be on the ballot in November, but as a candidate for the Working Families Party, who has endorsed him. The former senator said he isn’t sure if Crowley wants to remain a viable candidate, however, “I hope he does.”
He sees the far-Left Marxist/socialist trend within his former party as dangerous and damaging — not just to the Democrat brand but to the country as well, should that faction take over the party and then, God forbid, get a chance to govern.
Ocasio-Cortez and other Democratic Socialists make young, impressionable voters swoon with all of their talk about “equality” and redistribution. But rational people understand where such policies lead to when put into practice: Economic collapse, universal suffering, and violence.
“Her dreams of new federal spending would bankrupt the country or require very large tax increases, including on the working class. Her approach foresees government ownership of many private companies, which would decimate the economy and put millions out of work,” he writes.
The elder members of the party such as House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi are attempting to tamp down the enthusiasm over her victory, which the California Democrat described as a choice of voters “in one district.”
But she and other party elders had better get ready for what’s coming: more candidates like Ocasio-Cortez, not fewer. And in the bluest of blue states, they’re going to win.
