After months of hype from perpetually outraged Leftists in the media and political commentariat that fired FBI Director James Comey’s new book will finally spell the end of President Donald J. Trump’s presidency, what we’re all really about to get is yet another massive nothing burger from a butt-hurt former federal agent who obviously believes his press.
Those who have read advanced copies of the tome have expressed a range of emotions from head-shaking confusion to amusement at how Comey attempts to cast himself as some federal knight in shining armor while casting personal aspersions at Trump.
Others see legal problems including breaches of confidentiality that border or cross the line of legality.
“My first reaction to fired FBI Director James Comey’s new book ‘A Higher Loyalty’ is to demand that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein release the still-secret Comey memorandums describing his conversations with Donald Trump as president-elect and president,” writes former House Speaker Newt Gingrich at Fox News. “After seeing hundreds of pages of Comey’s self-serving version of reality, the American people deserve to see what he actually wrote at the time of these conversations.”
“Before you believe what is written in Comey’s book, you should watch this video compiled by the Republican National Committee to remember what leading Democrats said about Comey in 2016,” he writes. (Related: Gingrich: Mueller, Rosenstein now behaving like the Gestapo in Nazi Germany as never-ending POTUS probe expands.)
Democrats were highly critical of Comey in the days leading up to the November 2016 election for announcing that the FBI had reopened Hillary Clinton’s case into her mishandling of classified emails — after letting her off the hook despite her obvious criminal behavior months earlier.
Fox News correspondent Chris Wallace, who hosts a Sunday news program on the network that is not politically skewed, said he was surprised by “how little new there is in the book.” In addition, he said “we get a lot of opinions, very unpleasant opinions, of the president by James Comey,” but no “bombshells.”
“It seems to me that the real story in this book is that there’s no new hard evidence of any crime, of anything illegal, and it doesn’t really change the equation on President Trump,” he added.
At one point in the book, The National Sentinel reports, Trump brought up the salacious, unverified “Russian dossier” which claimed that he hired prostitutes to urinate on a bed once used by President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama while they were in Moscow.
Comey wrote in his memo that the president said it bothered him if there was “even a one percent chance” his wife thought it was true.
“He just rolled on, unprompted, explaining why it couldn’t possibly be true, ending by saying he was thinking of asking me to investigate the allegation to prove it was a lie. I said it was up to him,” Comey wrote.
“In what kind of marriage, to what kind of man, does a spouse conclude there is only a 99 percent chance her husband didn’t do that?” he writes in the book, which hits shelves April 17.
Even Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., a former federal prosecutor and supporter of special counsel Robert Mueller, lashed out at Comey for ‘politicizing’ the FBI.
“We need an apolitical FBI… I can’t think of anyone who’s done a better job of politicizing the FBI than he has in the last 36 to 48 hours,” he said, adding that it is “beneath the dignity of the [Justice Department] offices that he held” for also criticizing, in his book, Trump’s tie for being too long and his use of a tanning bed.
“I’m really disappointed,” he added, noting that Comey wrote “a tabloid book.”
Comey also writes that Trump is “untethered to the truth,” “ego-driven” (like Comey isn’t?), and that his presidency is a “forest fire.”
That said, unlike Comey, the president remains in office.
