It should come as a surprise to absolutely no one that call center workers are involved in a massive scam. After all, they have been the butt of scam-based jokes for decades now, and the anyone remotely related to telemarketing is seen as a borderline crook by a considerable amount of the western world — and for good reason. Their track record isn’t exactly glowing in regards to the opposite.
Over 70 call center workers in India were recently arrested by the country’s police for scamming and threatening thousands of Americans. A reported 6,500 Americans were defrauded in a scam where the call center workers used proxy servers in order to call hundreds of people. After receiving credit card information, superiors were called in and money was withdrawn from American bank accounts.
Sify reports that a police officer in India stated, “Whenever a new employee joined the call centres, the HR department would hand over a script in which the caller introduced himself as an IRS officer. All the employees knew about the scam. Once the caller got a 16-digit (prepaid card) number from a customer, he would pass it on to his senior in Mumbai.”
Thankfully, they were eventually caught and will hopefully be punished to the fullest extent. Criminal behavior like this should never be tolerated despite the fact that those who feel victim to it should have known better.
Now, why these people willingly gave their bank account information to suspicious people over the phone is something else that must be called in to question. How naive do you have to be to trust a complete stranger who called you with your financial information? Anyone who has any sort of access to news coverage should know better than this, but apparently many people in America have just completely lost their minds. These are the kinds of people who end up voting for Hillary Clinton.
All over the world, there are people that are trying to take advantage of America’s good nature. We see this with radical Islamic terrorist and now we see it with those working in Indian call centers. There is a huge moral issue in the world today, and it’s important that we are prepared to handle ourselves in these uncertain times.
This is a terrifying era to live in. Every now and then, we have to get real and honest about the harsh realities of the world. If we don’t, we could end up getting scammed once again.
